Whole lotta lurkin' goin' on

I'm guessing #1 is actually some automated bot or something -- helped with moving stuff from the older version of the boards to these boards?
Looking at the stats myself, well, the #1 user has been accused of being a posting-bot before, but I think he's actually flesh and blood. Who else has 34,000+ posts and at one point just has his post-count indicator reading "Tilt"? (Unless there are users who don't show up on the User list, which I would think is unlikely).

I was a lurker for years before I registered to make a post, then I went back to lurking for over a year, posting very infrequently, before I started to post more often (maybe a year ago).

Almost as many times as I've posted, I've written a reply to a thread and then simply had second thoughts about posting it, just closed the window instead and gone back to lurking. I'm getting better though. Now, instead of typing out a reply I'm never going to send, I just talk to the monitor.

As we can see from the data to my left, I don't post too often, and would classify myself as a lurker. I am somewhat surprised, however, that no one has yet mentioned the primary deterrent I encounter when deciding (or not, as the case often is) to post. And that is the intimidation factor. There are a lot of people here who know a whole heck of a lot more than I do about D&D and/or RPGs in general. It's hard to speak up when you are among a diverse and knowledgeable group. Maybe no one else has that experience....but it's definitely mine.

You're not alone. I don't feel comfortable discussing some topics when I have a distinct lack of experience.

The other deterrant is when threads venture into what I can only describe as 'creepy social territory'. There are some really disturbing stories of players/dms/parties etc, and I'm far from a prude when it comes to indecent behavior :P

Thankfully, most threads here seem to be filled with some pretty intelligent and entertaining banter, so I'm content to simply read for the most part.

Thanks for the link, Darkness.

According to that data, I'm the 65th most prolific poster on the boards!

Jeebus! Maybe I need to get a life!

Nah, the rest of you are just slackin' is all. ;)

Interesting stuff. As for me, I just post when I feel like I can make a contribution to a thread.

I'm usually in this boat. I consider myself a lurker not because of my post count, but how many threads I read before posting in one.

What gets me is people like this.

What gets me is there is this user with almost 9000 posts but he ditched ENworld for WoW…

I think his username was like AMG or something like that... It's been so long since he's updated his PbP games that I cannot really remember. ;)

I post infrequently (== lurk?) mainly for three reasons:

1. Conversational drift in a topic I'd otherwise like to post in has already, by the time I've seen it, made my input moot.
2. What I wanted to say has already been said -- often better than I would have said it -- or I learn through reading the topic that what I wanted to say contains a factual/rules error.
3. I don't have time to compose a post I'd be happy with that day.

I'm not a lurker, just infrequent. I cashed in at 1281 in line, but by this very post, I jump to 1270th! ;)

I notice that whether or not there's a lot of worth-free or spammy posts on here, I don't tend to notice them, unlike at other boards I have visited where I might see lots of posts like "Yeah!" or "Uh-huh" or such. Good for this board!!!

Well of course you can see from my post count, I am definetly a lurker on these forums. I post regulary on the wotc boards, but have really just started posting on here yesterday when I had a question.

This topic has inspired me to start posting alot more often, be it bad or good. :)
