As we can see from the data to my left, I don't post too often, and would classify myself as a lurker. I am somewhat surprised, however, that no one has yet mentioned the primary deterrent I encounter when deciding (or not, as the case often is) to post. And that is the intimidation factor. There are a lot of people here who know a whole heck of a lot more than I do about D&D and/or RPGs in general. It's hard to speak up when you are among a diverse and knowledgeable group. Maybe no one else has that experience....but it's definitely mine.

That sure hasn't stopped me...

babble babble babble....

I think it is interesting that on another Internet message board where I post frequently (not a gaming board; it's more sports-related), and which also has tens of thousands of registered users, the breakdown of number of posts runs pretty much the same: almost half the registered users have never made a post. And the vast majority of users have 10 posts or less.

I can understand people feeling like they don't have anything to contribute to a thread, or that other people have said what they wanted to say, only better. I feel like that frequently. There are many topics I feel like I have insufficient knowledge and/or experience to discuss. But I enjoy reading some of those threads -- they are very educational.

I mainly post on threads in which people ask for your experiences with gaming in general or a particular product. Or advice with running certain types of adventures or characters, if I have experience in that area.

I also have an active story hour, which gets me at least one post a week. :)

Another interesting thing I found is that, if you click on your name inside a thread and look at your public profile, it gives the daily average number of posts you make from the date that you first registered. Mine usually stays around 1.5 posts a day. I know there are many, many days on which I don't post at all. Which means I'm doing lots of posting on other days, in order to keep that average at that level.

The No. 1 poster averages more than 26 posts a day.

Now, what I wonder is why people who lurk so extensively that they've never made a post register at all. When I was just a young lurker, I didn't register for a few months until I was ready to post. Has ENWorld changed so you have to register in order to access all of the forums?

Demiurge out.
