Depends on how the mythology is set up.
In the Melnibonean mythos there are animal lords for the different types of animals in addition to the elemental lords and gods/demons of Chaos and the lords of law.
In Nehwon and the FR there are animal cults dedicated to single species.
In Shadowrun there are totems for various animal species, sort of archetype spirits. Dog is detailed in the first shadowrun set of novels IIRC as the shaman's totem spirit.
