Why all the demon love?

After having just finished FC 1 (A good book, by the way, but not one that really "clicked" for me), I have to say that I prefer Devils over Demons. They are just so much more... malicious.

That being said, there are a lot of different demons that I like using. Succubi spring to mind - a Succubus is an excellent foe. And, ever since my halfling druid took on a Vrock mano et mano, I've feared those pesky little buggers.

I think part of the demon love comes from the fact that the lawful evil nature of devils tends to make them seem more like BBEGs,whereas the chaotic and violent nature of demons makes them more suited for simple hack encounters.

But I agree. More CERTAINLY needs to be done with yugoloths. And that's something that's hopefully going to be apparent in the next few issues of Dungeon, with more of the critters showing up in Savage Tide here and there. Including stats and an important role for a unique one...

That has me really excited right now. Can't wait for those issues! :D

Personally, I think that demons are perfectly capable of having complex and sneaky plans; you need look no further than Graz'zt and Malcanthet and Pazuzu for evidence here. I do get a kick out of devils, but I'm not really interested in writing D&D stuff about them. Just a personal preference thing, I guess.

James,

Don't forget about good ole Frazzy! He can plot with the best of them too. At least once he gets his anger issues under control and his layer back under his thumb.

Now you are making Chaos not chaotic at all. It seems wrong to assume that they have further time horizons and more complex plans than the LE or NE ones. If that were the case, they would not be chaotic and the others could not be more lawful than they.

Chaotic /= Stupid

Chaotic != random. Not every definiton of chaotic, anyway. Who says that the demons have to adher to the simple "chaotic = random" definiton. They could as well adher to the "chaotic = so elaborate and complex that the patterns are very hard to make out, so it all seems complex" definition.

Lawful just means that it has evident structures, stuff that everyone can see.

True, but don't forget their placement on the Wheel.

The Abyss. The realm of Chaotic Evil. Again, chaotic.

It's quite likely that the Abyss itself is the "mastermind" behind it all. That demon doesn't really know why he killed those 10 people (well, he "knows": It was a lot of fun) But he fulfilled his part in the Great Abyssal plan nonetheless.

I'm not saying chaotic is random OR stupid. I'm saying that Chaos is less organized, less methodical, and less patient that law. You example reverses the relationship. Chaos is more than individualism.
