Why aren't there good alcohol rules for D&D?

Of course there's an Alcohol rule. The one who has the Alcohol Rules.

Or am I confusing it with something else?

I actually tried to write a set of fairly realistic house-rules to simulate the effects of alcohol - it required a lot of research, of course, and then I ran into the problem that I could never remember what it was I learned when I woke up the next morning (other than bar wenches are never as attractive as you thought they were)... :\

If you fail the Fort save DC associated with the drink, you take temporary Dex & Wis damage.

That sparked a neuron; IIRC Baldur's Gate has intoxication & there are different DCs for each drink. I think something like that, with cumulative penalties acruing based on how many drinks you've had in X time could work. Should the temp damage would also apply to Int?

Also, should the effects of different drinks last different times? It'd be a pain to track that way even if it did better reflect reality (no idea if it would or not, I've never been drunk IRL).

Different drinks last longer depending on the proof and the dosage. Basically, the more intoxicant in your system, the longer it takes to get rid of it. It my vary from person to person, but if you have two drinks, each 50 proof, one won't make you drunk longer than the other for the same quantity.

Now, MIXED drinks... that takes longer, because your body processes each type of drink seperately.

Anyone want to try updating the 2e Netbook Guide to Alchohol up to 3(.5)e? I've found great use for the 2e guide... esspecially the section on specialty drinks, and I've hinted to my players that alchohol dragons exist somewhere in the world should they ever want to go trying to hunt one out. The hangover rule has been fun to use as well.

The next time my wife complains that I'm a worthless drunk, I can tell her that I'm playtesting.

for example> after 5 beers (my current vantage point)..woo hoo for getting home early

1. +2 alcohol bonus to Diplomacy because everyone loves me and thinks I'm cool and funny and stuff.
2. -2 alchol penalty to Profession: Typing.
3. What the hell am I doiong?
4. Oh yeah. Nevermind.
5. -2 penalty to Drive
6. +2 bonus to Delusion: Seruiously, I'm okay to drive. Shut up.

I can lookm forward to a number of Fortitude saves...one to resit a nap and other to resit a very personal visit to the bathroom.

[insert OGL text here...}

Alcohol is simple. It is an ingested poison that damages Dex and Wis (the stronger the drink, the higher the DC and the greater the damage).

If you suffer more than half your Dex or Wis through the ingestion of Alcolhol, you become nauseated. If your Dex reaches 0, you can't even stand up. If your Wis reaches 0, you're unconscious. If you get nauseated, you get a hangover on the next day (treat as an injury to the head, as per the DMG).

For every dose of alcohol you ingested in the past hour, you get a cumulative -1 penalty to resist the effects of your next drink.

If you eat sufficient food to line up your stomach, you get a +2 circumstance bonus to resist the effects of alcohol.

I had some (space) pirates try to get one of the PCs drunk (to make it easier to take his stuff). I had him make a fort save, DC 5, +1 for every drink. If he failed a check, he'd take a cumulative -2 penalty to everything (checks, saves, attacks).
