Why can't my Wizard take the Use Magic Device skill?

Hello there.

I find it very weird that a wizard with knowledge of magic cannot take the Use Magic Device skill, to use magical items he or she couldn't use before.

Any opinions?

By all means he should be able to, it makes perfect sense. All you have to do is convince the DM to let you. Try a feat, become a Loremaster.

Personally I feel this skill should be on the Sorcerer list to represent that mysterious unorthodox approach to magic, if its in your blood why should you care what flavor a device contains, its all magic to you.

I don't think it's that wierd. Wizards can already use so many things, do they really need to be able to use all divine stuff also?

Yes wizards are cool.

By the sound of things, that's because you've talked your spineless DM into removing spell level increases for wizards using metamagic, given them free use of all magic items and removed damage caps for spells. ;)

Wizards are quite cool. I've got an un-multi'ed one myself. :)

And the reason wizards don't need 'Use Magic Device' (at least in the campaign I'm in) is that they don't need it. They can either make their own magic device or use their knowledge to figure out the ones they find.

It's much more useful for someone like a rogue or a bard who has little to no powerful magic at their disposal, and needs to know their away around certain items and situations to compliment their 'jack of all trades' feel.

From a role-playing perspective, the typical wizard should die of shock at the very idea of just fiddling around with a magic item until you generate a response from it...

Do you really want to see wizards casting Heal from scrolls?

And for another point at least.... or Storm of Vengence?

Actually, there's a lot I see a wizard with an ancient grimore or the right herbs doing. Magic is supposed to be able to do anything, and there's a lot of anything D&D wizards can't do.

I guess it's in there for balance, and a little flavor, though. With all the items at your disposal already, would you sink points into it anyways just to use a healing wand, though?
