I guess the idea of emotionally investing in a profit-making company, its marketing and the employees trying to sell product, to the point of angrily defending and even imagining insults where none exist, is alien to me. Makes no sense.
It really makes no sense, but it's not that alien if think better about it...

Perfect sense? No, silly.
But expressing disappointment that a pre-existing beloved aspect has been taken away does make more sense than someone else being angry at that same person for expressing his disappointment.
And yet there are people offended by the decision.

So why are you not outcrying against them, exactly?

I would consider this pot sufficiently stirred at the moment.

Give it a few more posts and this thread will surely boil over ;)

You can't find a thread on the board anymore where someone questions WotC product without an angry defender jumping in to call the guy an idiot for being "negative."

Yes you can. There are literally thousands of them. Please, if you're going to criticize others for going "over the top", you should refrain from doing so yourself.

Don't we, as consumers, have a right to disagree with design direction??? To question what the company is trying to sell us???

Yes, you most certainly do. If you are attempting to do so in a civil, reasoned tone, and you find another poster who isn't allowing you, such that they step over the line of civility, you should report their posts.

Railing in public about it using hyperbole probably won't help your cause - it will instead simply attract those who disagree with you, and they'll respond with a whole pile of snark. Which they have done. I don't see this thread going anywhere good, so I'm going to close it.
