Why do elves trance?

I'd like to state for the record that Elves trancing is the most asinine thing in the core D&D rules. Elves not being able to grow beards is also stupid.

Yeah! Like, how the heck am I supposed to be able to tell the difference between a male elf and a female dwarf, now????

Dude. There's no such thing as a male elf. And no such thing as a female dwarf. Dwarves and elves are the males and females of the same species!

It was in a discussion of either the Complete Book of Elves or Changeling: The Dreaming, and you wrote a fairly long essay about how the Elven lack of dreams drove them to psychosis, and that they just pretended to be all happy and such to avoid snapping.

Why? Even amongst us mundane humans on earth their are some ethnic groups (native americans, asians, polynesians) who rarely grow beards. Why then is it so strange for a non-human to be beardless?

The dwarf is the one with the horned helmet on at all times, and the elf is the one with the bow. Duh.
