I'd like to know where the term comes from as well. Always seemed strange that any lowering of power is proclaimed as nerf. I first heard the term when I was playing EQ, and it has not mades it way into the gaming community. I have no idea how long it has been used to describe lowering of power in a tabletop RPG. Kind of funny.

You know, a full suit of nerf armor would be kinda cool, actually ;) Granted, it'd have to be available in day-glo colors.

I think it's because nerf weapons do less... anything (well, they bounce more) than the real thing, thus when you "nerf" something, you're making it weaker because it's like you're making it out of styrofoam.

A nerf football is like a regular football only lighter and softer. A rule or gameplay item that has been "nerfed" has had some of it's substance removed so that it is no longer as substantial as it once was.
