Put me in the "I buy them because I don't have time to do it myself" camp.
Between my "real" job, consulting jobs, wife, toddler, family and other interests, I can't find the time to really do the kind of job I want on a home-brew adventure.
Because I find that sandboxing, while rewarding in many ways, requires too much prep work for me, I generally run adventure paths. Right now, we are in Scales of War, but I would prefer to switch it out and run WotBS4e with my face-w-face group. My attempt at running an online WotBS4e was cut short by life and committments, so I had to sadly admit that I can't run more than one game at a time right now.
So, one game at a time for me, and I prefer it to be a published AP. Now... since there is more than one to choose from (WotBS, Scales of War, a couple of converted Paizo APs) I have SOME variety, and if necessary, I can cobble together a few unrelated adventures into a single story arc, or several episodic story arcs.
