Why doesn't WotC have Master Indices?

Did TSR shrinkwrap their books? How TH did you do that?
Dunno about Bront, but where I live, we didn't have any FLGS until the last few years (and the one we have now don't seem to prioritize RPGs all that high). My only way of buying RPG stuff was via mail order, and the place me and my buddies usually ordered from had a mail order catalog that consisted mostly of a list of product numbers, product names, and prices, with sidebars highlighting three or four items per page. With a setup like that, it's easy to see "Magic Encyclopedia" in the catalog, think "That sounds like a cool thing," and buy it without seeing it.

Why doesn't WotC have master indices for their products on their website?

Three quick points:

1. It would be an enormous amount of work initially, then a fair bit thereafter. Can WOTC/Paizo cost-justify the expense? I doubt it.

2. If such an index existed, we would quickly see that too many WOTC products are produced without a clue about each other. There are a number of feats with the same name, published in different books, for the same version of D&D, but with different effects. Oops...

3. Several of us suggested to Erik Mona that the availability of an index like this would really add value to a Dragon/Dungeon subscription - that it might make or break the decision to subscribe. Erik's response was, essentially, that an index is on their "wish list", but - at a minimum - it's a couple years away. And it may never happen, given demands for other resources.

Point number 1 says to me the chances are slim. Point number 3 says to me that the chances are nil. Great idea (IMO) - just wish we could somehow convince the powers that be to do it.
