Why I DON'T hate 3.5 edition

Naturally people aren't allowed to have jobs that make money! Because everyone wants something for nothing! Think of cigarettes and other :):):):)e that people buy!!! If they cut down on that for a week then they could easily buy a book! Besides it seems that you can actually download it anyway!!! for those people who actually want to put up with having bits of errata and paper arround. These people are trying to create this game for US. The changes are because of reaction to what people want. When 2e was around they probably didn't get anywhere near as much feedback. With the proliferation of the internet, information moves a whole lot faster. So that revision can come out only 3 years after instead of 10. I didn't play 2e because of the system. I played Runequest instead but used the Forgotten Realms setting. When 3e game out I embraced it with open arms!

Just look at the mass of varying opinions at this wonderful website. How many people are there out there that don't post because they are too busy playing!! I know the twenty plus gamers that I know and regularly play with don't know about it or don't care! (doesn't mean I haven't tried to tell them about how great it is :D)

Personally, I haven't played a 3E game in two years. But I wasn't one of the people opposed to the new edition before it was released. In fact, if anything I was excited about it, hopeful for the future of gaming. I expected to be wowed by the new rules, but instead I was just confused and baffled. I gave 3E six months before finally giving it up and havn't played any games using the 3E rules since.

I believe I disliked the new edition primarily because 3E focuses too much on the rules of the game, not the game itself. Now you might say that I could just pick and choose which rules I wanted to use, but have you actually tried doing this? Especially with players who know how to read?

Also, before 3E came out one of my greatest joys was to write and post material on the internet (primarily for the Birthright setting). I tried to do that following the release of 3E, especially release material that was setting specific, rather than exactly following the rules, but most of my ideas were rejected because of that very reason, they didn't fit the rules, didn't conform to 3E. After this happened several times I just gave up and stopped writing.

Now you might call me bitter, but don't I have a right to be if I choose? 3E has meant the end of my gaming life, at least as far as D&D has been concerned. I can't go back to 2E because I don't know anyone that plays it any more and I don't want to play 3E because I hate and despise it. So I have just given up gaming pretty much alltogether.

I wish a rule would be established on the boards by the folks in charge that there will be no more threads allowed about 3.5 untill it comes out. I am so sick of hearing about it. I've seen complaints about [Hivemind} threads. Well, they PALE in comparision to the 3.5 threads. (I got no probs with Hivemind)

...and for the record; I'm not wasting my money on new books, but I will use the revised rules, 'cause they seem pretty good.
Well, if that rule was being around the time before the 3rd edition came out - this would have been a dead board :)

I don't mind the threads, gives me food for thought on the subject if I will (a) buy some of the revised books and (b) incorporate (parts of) it in the games I'm playing.

Huh...

Now I thought the answer to his statement was going to be... Because I've got 100 dollars and nothing better to spend it on...

Oh well I've been wrong before.:D

Ouch. Well, I hope someday you can find your way back to something in gaming that you can enjoy as much as you did before. :)

And as an aside: This is not the proper thread to complain about 3e. This is a place to complain about Revised 3e. :p Besides, who know at this point. Maybe 3.5 will open things up for you. Give it a shot and see what happens. And if you are still too jaded to get into it I suggest stepping away from RP-ing for a bit. I sometimes feel the need to recharge and it almost always helps. ;)

?

Um, I don't know about anyone else, but any concerns I have aired have been entirely over things they HAVE told us.

Sheesh...

It sounds more like a problem between you and the people you were dealing with, rather than the game. I wouldn't let being disgusted with someone cause me to hate something else. I'd find other people to deal with.

So, there is no pleashing you ( ;) )

There doesn't seem to be anything that can be done to bring you into gaming. It's too bad. I'm just recently (the past few weeks) starting to game after a few years without it (not by choice -- just no time). I'm glad I got back to it, and hopefully you'll do the same one day.

You know, as much as I like 3E, I really get where you're coming from with this. I thought that 2E was a disaster. The rules were often too binding, and when they weren't binding, they were contradictory and overblown. But what that meant was we did a lot of making things up as we went along.

At first, I thought having rules for just about EVERYTHING, as 3E does was great, but now, people won't LET you just make things up as you go along. The assumption used to be, "there's no rule for it (or the rules don't make sense) so let's make one up." The assumption is now "There's no rule for that, so you CAN'T do it."

More than ever, you need to find a GOOD DM if you want to do anything other than Rules-Lawyer, and this board aside, I haven't run into one in YEARS, since before 3E came out, in fact.
