Why I DON'T hate 3.5 edition

I hear you Canis. I've found myself on both ends of that and I'm finding that I don't like it. I'm glad I'm in this online game; the DM is really teaching me how to improvise.

I dont HATE 3.5, I am skeptical of it, and a little afraid. The transition between 2e to 3e was 10 years. That is a long time for books and campaign settings to be created. The game matured, the playing audience changed, the core demographic got older.

Then there is 3e. Its a great system. Simple, yet allows for a lot of customization. Sure some things are broken, but many of those things can be fixed with a well worded errata, or a house rule to fit the play style of the DM and players. e.g. If everyone in the party is abusing Items of Haste. It works, it is impossible to make everything perfectly balanced in every game system. You just have to accept that.

Now there is 3.5e. Sounds like a great idea. When I first heard about it, I liked it. I thought it would just be a reprint of the core books that clarify certain rules, and fill in some loop holes.

But as I hear more and more about it, I see that its not about clarifying the rules, things are CHANGING, things will be DIFFERENT. When I say change and difference, I mean with respect to backwards compatibilty. Some things that might (note how I say MIGHT) be changing can really screw up existing PCs, invalidate some sections of books I have, or strike me as unessesary changes.

If the 3.5e books do no more than make the rules easier to understand, I will buy 3 copies of the New PHB. I want to support WotC. However, if when the new edition is finally released, a lot of things are drastically changed, so much that backwards compatibility is a real issue, I will never buy a new book. I like the rules as they are. I play 3e enough where I know what is broken, and what is underpowered, and I have a few house rules to fix them.

My greatest fear with 3.5e is that so much changes that I feel I must get the new books because my old core books are completely invalidated, or so much has changed that I need to have the entire SRD taped to the inside cover of each of my core rule books
