Why I don't support my LGS

Oh, hey! You're right. My bad entirely! Apologies, as my misreading that post influenced nearly all of my posts herein (I guess that's what I get for posting early in the morning). That said, I still think that the OP was being a bit extreme. That's his right, of course, but what he described is a relatively minor infraction against consumers, IMO. I guess I'm just a far less demanding consumer than many.

Been starting to wonder if you are the "fatbeard" in question, given your persistent and somewhat offensive atttitude toward the issue.

About the third time the guy told me he was closing in a few minutes, I'd have an issue with his behavior. Tone of Voice (which the OPoster also referenced) goes along with it.

If you give me the impression that you don't want me in your store, you can bet that I will not come back. That's how I feel about such things, that's what the OP has implied.

Your being overly defensive about it is another issue entirely and I for one would appreciate it if you'd just drop the issue rather than keep pushing your attitude.

In addition to the above, game stores also have to diversify into comics, cards, books, minis, and to a lesser degree possibly action figures, and toys just to remain competitive. If the comic industry falters (and it certainly has since the heady days of the late 80's to early 90's) or the card game sector has a downslide (which also happened shortly after the pokemon craze) that will impact the bottom line of any gamestore. Couple that with a fan base that can prove to be both fickle and manic in its demands for their form of entertainment, and you have the ingredients for a profit margin that is razor-thin at best.

In addition, I have heard from a couple of different LGS owners that "shrink" (product loss, usually due to shoplifting) can be pretty high. Small local stores have trouble covering those losses, and cannot afford to staff to prevent it (both of these stores ran games in the store and to be honest the staff was often involved in, or at least observing, the games, so their full attention was not always on the store and the other people within).

The fact that terms like "fatbeard" and "jerkface" are being used make me wonder. There is even the assumption that this guy just wanted to get out of there to "level his night elf or whatever" I mean, if that is what the average gamer is going to call someone at the LGS for trying to do his job, I really wonder why more people are not defensive.
I would have problems with any customer who referred to my employees in this way.

I maintain that jdrakeh is free to be defensive if he or she wants to be. There was already an apology for misreading the post.

I'm not basing his fatbeardness, jerkfaciness, or likelyness to play a Night Elf on his appearance or that he was a gamer or that he worked in a game store. I'm basing it on his behavior.

I mean come on, its not like I accused him of playing a blood elf paladin or a hunter or anything.

Now that would be a shot. Or a Gnome Warlock.

God I hate gnomes...

I understand that he was less than tactful. However, I do not think that jerkface is a term that will likely help anything. For that matter, I do not think that fatbeard will help either.

If you call the LGS and ask to speak to the manager or owner, I would avoid terms like that. I would simply say "I was in there on this night, and this is what happened and it made me feel this way".

That will get you much farther than name calling or presuming to know why the employee wanted to get out of there.

I didn't call him a jerkface or a fatbeard, nor would I do so to his manager. I'm a little confused as to why you thought I did or would. I used the terms describing his behaviour.

I do not think you would because I do not know you.

I do however know some people who would refer to others in that manner.

Also, I may simply be out of the loop, but how does "fatbeard" refer to behavior?

I am saying, you seem to have presumed some things about this person (i.e. he was a gamer and hired because of that, he wanted to get out of there for selfish reasons, etc.)

You have a legitimate complaint and you should bring it up to the manager.

I just think that the name calling and such colors how some have reacted to you. I know I was more defensive than I probably would have been had name calling not have been used. You can also tell when someone thinks insulting things about another person even if they do not say it. Not always in writing, but in person almost always.

In my opinion it is always best to presume the best (or at the very least ignorance) until proven otherwise.
