D&D 4E Why I hate the Hydra: —and other dumbed down 4E monsters—

Well, if you're hitting it every round, then it never gets to regenerate. I think the "hit with a silver weapon disables regeneration for a round" makes a lot of sense, actually.

Well I hope they don't use the same 'it's too complex' philosophy moving forward. 4E is way too mechanically simple as it is . . . it could use some serious spicing up on the complexity scale.

This is a joke, right? I mean, uh.... What?

The hydra's big downfall is total lack of ranged attacks, making it meat against a group of ranged strikers. But that's hardly unique for melee brute types.

This is what pyro and cryo hydras are for.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised, this time... ;)

I am more concerned about all monsters with the same role having the same AC and nearly the same defenses...

no matter how big they are...

A gelatinous cube has a dex score of 14 and a reflex of 16 and ac of 18... how can you miss something filling out a whole 10ftx10ftx10ft cube?

You hit, but your weapon bounces off its rubbery surface. You hit, but its glistening skin is unaffected by your fire burst because it didn't penetrate a weak point. Etc.

Here, use this to fix the Hydra:

Learnaen Legacy (immediate, when bloodied)
When a hydra is bloodied, it immediately regains enough hit points to be 20 above its "Bloodied" value and gains an additional bite attack. This happens every time the hydra is bloodied, until it has 12 bite attacks.
Special: attacks that deal fire damage don't trigger this ability.

That actually popped up first in Eberron stuff.

You know, it's funny how things persist. For instance, the "Blessed Crossbow Bolt" business? No where in mythology. It actually came from an episode of "Kolchek, the Nighthunter" because Kolchek shot a Rakshasa with a crossbow.

Of course, in the 3.5 MM the 'blessed crossbow bolt' vulnerability became DR/good and piercing... which meant the most cost effective weapon to fight one with in Eberron was a flametouched iron rapier.

In your opinion, of course...
