Why is Dragon Disciple still around?

Ah well right... it's not really a template or is it? Savage Species? LA +1? The typical half-ogre everyone is annoyed about?

Halfogre is a race and not a template. There are at least a couple of threads in the past month about it, saying too much will cause this thread to degenerate quickly ;)

Dude! Half-ogres rock!

Nuh-uh! They're way too bogus!

Yur mom is bogus!

Yur mom's a half-ogre!

Ok, I think that about covers the entirety of the half-ogre debate, so we can go ahead and move on without having to rehash the whole thing. :D

I think people are just confused about why it's in T&B. Why put it in the wizard/sorcerer splatbook if it's not a spellcasting PrC? On the other hand, it requires arcane magic to take, so it doesn't really belong in S&F either...

It's a nifty class that's going to have an important place in my campaign, but it doesn't fill as well-defined a niche as other PrCs.

edit: Blast, I'm on my wife's account. This is supposed to be MerakSpielman talking. Oh well.

This seems like the lamest PrC ever devised, yet somehow it make it into the Epic Level Handbook and then into 3.5. It's not really a caster, it sucks in HTH, it doesn't really sneak around (what with size increases and wings and all). You turn into a freakish dragon/man/thing so you ain't gonna be running for mayor. What does it do that keeps it alive and kicking?

I would say it has something to do with the "sorcerers are descended from dragons" nonsense.

Problem with the class: Even if they would have given the class half spell progression, it wouldn't have made sense for the spellcasters. Anythink remotely similar to full spell progression would have made it unthinkable to give these stat boosts. So that's the problem :D

What stat modifiers in the MM, these are only to be applied if for exemple you want to create a huge gobelin race. Then you would take the gobelin stats and add this modifier to create your new race.

Nowhere in the DMG it is written that if you increase/decrease in size your stats are affected. It mentions about AC and to hit modifier but nothing about stats.

The DD already get +8 increase in STR, which is in part due to the size increase.

In MM you'll note some creatures gain in size with HD. You use the table on adjusting size to alter the stats of the creature. So a Huge Ankheg has more strength, con, & natural armor than a Large Ankheg but less dex. That's part of what allows a critter with 2x base HD to actually be a base CR+2 opponent.

Well... actually there was the Arcane Duelist from the WotC site, and I personally think the melee version of a loremaster would be really cool. The smart fighter - expanded Combat Expertise in the same way that Frenzied Berserker gets improved Power Attack, higher skill points and access to those skills that various books say are instrumental to waging war but most melee classes don't have on their lists. Tactical and Quick-thinking type abilities.

I'd play one.
