Why is Dragon Disciple still around?

Oups forgot about that case, but my point is still valid, these bonus are not simply caused by the increase in size, Usually a larger creature is stronger than a smaller creature.

Notice here that we are not talking about a Large 4HD creature becoming Huge but of a Huge 8HD creature.

The guideline in the MM is to give you a recommandation as how you should modify a base creature to reflect the stronger and bigger member of the species. Note that they are not enlarged version but simply stronger and larger beings.

Becoming larger by whatever means do not cause an increase in strength in D&D unless the spell, power, etc specifically states it.

In the case of the DD the increase in strength and other skills reflect both the increase in size and the change of nature of the player.

I just made a nifty Brd2/Brb3/DragonDisciple5 (silver)spiked-chain-wielding NPC.

Nasty. Only problem is he's designed with 3.0 rules. Only non-core things I used were the Dragon Disciple and the Deft Opportunist feat (+4 to-hit to AoOs)When my players run into him, they're going to have their hands full!

Actually, with reguards to the dragon disciple/size issue: I just checked again and apparently 3.5 dragon disciples do not gain a size increase. So the point is rather moot, really.

Cause everyone knows Mesosian sorcery is the best bar none! ;) Titanic sorcery isn't that bad either. now that being said, I think a half troll half dragon wouldn't be a bad thing. Course the half dragon you'd do the savage progression first. DD is good for melee combat, but if you want something with heritage involved, some other Draconomicion Pr-classes are better.

Why?

We don't have spellcater versions of duelist, or melee versions of loremaster...

Well, maybe that's because Duelist doesn't require Sorcerer/Bard levels, and Loremaster doesn't require Weapon Specialization!

The Dragon Disciple is a class that requires a spontaneous spellcaster, so it's only right in expecting it to offer spellcasting options.

Whip out your little Draconomicon and suddenly your Dragon Desciple takes on a whole new level of uberness. Metabreath feats anyone?

I suggest that you go back and read the rules for metabreath feats again. Metabreath feats can only be used by creatures that have a breath weapon whose time between uses is expressed in rounds. Therefore, out of true dragons and half-dragons, only a true dragon can take metabreath feats because the only wait 1d4 rounds between uses of their breath weapon.

I love the dragon disciple :D

In 3.0 I played a sorcerer 1 / cleric 7 that went into the dragon disciple class. Lots of nice extra lvl 4 spells (divine powers) :) ... then after the "turn into large creature" lvl I took two more cleric levels, so the rest of the bonus spells went into lvl 5 (righteous might).

So I walked around like a large halfdragon and in true horrible combats I had lots of righteous might's and quickened divine favors :D

============

Now in 3.5 I also have dragon disciple, its a dwarven barbarian 2 / fighter 4 / battlerager 5 / sorcerer 2 / dragon disciple 2

All bonus spells go into enlarge person :D ... (he's a spiked chain wielder, and 20 ft reach is just sooooooooo nice). I won't take lvl 10 DD, because then enlarge person won't work anymore.

Believe me, you wouldn't need it anymore.

More Dragons

If you like playing a warrior type with dragon ancestry, I'd suggest you take a look at the Dragon Samurai (or something like that) from the D&D Miniatures Handbook. To me, it looks real good.
