Why is H1 coming out a month before the PHB?

Even with 3E, alot of folks have played Sunless Garden ...
That would be Sunless Citadell, right? (Meepo FTW!)

The Sunless Garden (from Goodman Games) came a lot later and was for level 6-8.

For the same reason I was able to run a Vampire:the Requiem game a month before release.

Of course, White Wolf gave that (rather lengthy) scenario away absolutely free.

Yeah, it really is just a buyable version of the free scenario PDFs of White Wolf's. Can't say I ever actually played them, but I did use them for NPC/Plot ideas in my own games.

Also this reminds me, I wonder the whole Plot-Card idea, is somewhat reminiscent of how there is Storyteller Cards, where it is a text-bubble that gives basic information for that part of the plot and they go in order. They also have area to write your own things. Very nice way for a Storyteller/DM to keep track of the plot-line.

Originally this was to come out a full month before the PHB but with schedule changes it is just under a 3 week gap.

It is made to be a 4e preview that whets your appetite for the main course of core rulebooks. It contains quick start rules, 3 double-sided poster maps, pre-gen characters, and an adventure that takes you from levels 1-3.

If you powered through the module you could probably play it once with the pre-gens and then again with your own characters. I guess most people will just wait and play it when the core books come out.

I am play-testing this in my 4e game right now (I played tonight) and I have to say this is a great adventure. Yes, I am biased but I love it and I wish I could play it everyday.

I am playing with my own character (Eladrin Rogue named Teemu Makinen). Today we had a great encounter (it was short game) and some fun social interaction with a NPC and I have a new little NPC buddy now but I will stop there because I don't want to spoil anything.

I was really excited for this when it was first announced, but now with there only being a 2 week gap between its release and the release of the full rules I'm starting to have second doubts about getting it.
Yeah, that's a weird schedule change. The change with the core books was supposedly because the retailers asked for it (mine dislike the books coming out at once). However, they moved the PHB a month forward and this further ahead. Why move this at all?

Sure some stores hate it but for most (and us) it made sense to have one huge event around the release instead of 3 smaller ones.

The reason was to provide spacing over the roll out.

April: Dungeons of Dread and Minis Starter
May: H1: KotSF
June: Core Books

The June release is on a Friday and not the normal Tuesday so we can have the big launch event weekend. It is early in the month so we can space ourselves from the next M:TG set release which tends to tie up dollars at the store and distributor level (4e and a MTG set puts a lot of credit limit and cash strain on a hobby store).

Or in my case, probably from about level 1 to 1, as if it really is any good I fully intend to ret-con it for 1e and run it early in my new campaign this summer. :)

My only comment: H1 should be released as soon as it is ready. End of April even. From the blogs I got the impression that it was pretty much ready now.

A lot of my hard earned (I'm in work now BTW :D) euros are going your way this summer.

That's slightly bonkers, but whatever floats your boat. :)

Hey, a good adventure is a good adventure... Many times I've taken an adventure written for one game and changed the mechanics to work with a different game of my choice (sometimes even changing genre's for goodness sake!)

I love the creativity behind good adventures. I imagine Lanefan does too!
