Why is H1 coming out a month before the PHB?

Hey, a good adventure is a good adventure... Many times I've taken an adventure written for one game and changed the mechanics to work with a different game of my choice (sometimes even changing genre's for goodness sake!)

I love the creativity behind good adventures. I imagine Lanefan does too!

I can imagine that, but the adventure has preview rules for 4e. I'd run it with those first to see how it plays before converting it.

Still whatever does it for him. The adventure does sound good. :D

So have I. But sometimes when trying to do this I realized that the adventure didn't translate well, because after stripping it down to its core there was really nothing left.

Then again, I've also found that a good test for adventures is trying to keep all locations while replacing all encounters or vice versa. If that works without problems the adventure's probably NOT a good one. Because basically it means it's completely generic.
Being generic is a good thing if I am just looking for an adventure idea; it's a bad thing for an adventure that's supposed to be fully developed and ready to play without putting further effort in it.

Dunno, I'm tired to heck of goblins. I was hoping they would release something unique, something that would take the game into a new direction form the getgo. You know, something with more humanish opponents, high roleplaying and a single yet dangerous monster encounter, which would highlight th PoL setting.

Wading through goblins doesn't sound very....exciting sorry to say. maybe beause its been ton a billion times before.

I am play-testing this in my 4e game right now (I played tonight) and I have to say this is a great adventure. Yes, I am biased but I love it and I wish I could play it everyday.

But was it cool? ;)

I don't want to spoil the adventure but we have encountered a lot more than goblins including some "humanish" opponents, some alive and some on the undead side, as well as other monster types and we have not even hit the second level of the dungeon yet.

Thats good to know. Basically I'm hoping the intro adventure highlights the new roleplay intensive (or so we are told) diplomacy mechanics. Basically, with all the PoL talk I am hoping 4e will allow a more down to earth castles and bandits type of game, (with some a song of ice and fire influences). That is not really possible in 3e due to the necessity of magic items, class abilities (even rangers have spellcasting), hp bloat etc. I am aware many ofthese things will be prevalent in 4e, but its been said the DMG will provide optional rules for a more down to earth grittier game.

hopeless, amazon.co.uk are doing the core books for £13.19 each. I've ordered them all for £39.57. Shadowfell is going for £13.56.

Cheers,
Liam

Much obliged I should really say thank god for amazon too but I'm watching the England vs switzerland match and I don't want to jinx them!

Okay, that just jumped out at me. What's with the Finnish name? Golden Compass influence?

Yes it is a Finnish name, a hybrid of 2 people I once knew back in my snowboard days.

When thinking about names after reading the Eladrin chapter in the PHB Scandinavia jumped out at me as an inspiration. I liked the sound of them and it is such a unique language compared to Norwegian, Danish, or Swedish that I went with Finnish names for my Eladrin.

In the past I have gone with Northwestern US Indian (Native American) names for elves so this time I went with something different.
