Why is it that babies need more sleep than adults?

I have to admit, if I didn't have responsibilities, I'd sleep a lot more than I do now. In fact, if possible, I'd revert to just sleeping and eating. (Much like when I was a student, actually.)

Wait... no gaming or internet what so ever? How could you live like that?

Is there a scientific reason babies need more sleep? My nephew sleeps 13-14 hours of the day (this includes afternoon nap). Is this normal?

The extensive sleep is stress moderator. If the little darlings didn't sleep so much then mom and dad would be psycho-stressed and abandon the little darlings on a cold winter night.

Seriously now, kids just need a lot of sleep. The younger they are the more they need. Fresh babies need and usually get 14-16 hrs a day, older toddlers really only need 9 or so but often (thankfully) sleep longer.

Most teens and adults need more sleep then they get. Teens should try to get 9.5 hrs a day if they can manage it, they actually need more then 10 year old do according to medical studies. When i was of post college and college age i could go weeks on end.
Adults should be getting at least 6 hours and hopefully 8.

Scienitifically human infants are born in a neurologically immature state and undergo massive neurological growth during the first 3 years. Good Neurological growth requires the release of certain hormones including growth hormone and serotonin (a neurotransmiter) which are most active when the body is asleep. Studies on deprivation of REM sleep in infants has shown a link to later behavioural disfunction and lower brain mass.

Other functions of sleep - memory processing, physical growth, cell rejuventation (healing) and energy restoration are also of utmost importance to babies and so add up to the long hours of sleep observed up to 5-7yrs

As to the afternoon nap Babies don't fully develop circadian rhythms until about 6 months old and hence do not have a regular sleep-awake cycle instead responding to physical needs (pain, wet, cold, hungry) which is why they don't sleep through the night until later.

and yes Teens do not more than 8 hours sleep (10 is good, if it goes to 16 hours though then you have a problem)

I have the special ability to sleep as long as I am able. I can sleep 3 hours or 13 then wake up and go pretty much the same. I try not run on very little sleep for very long, I believe there is a direct correlation between sleep patterns/chronic fatigue/depression and fibromyalgia.

Babies and young need more sleep than adults not only because they are growing, because sleep does rest and recharge the body, but also to rest and recharge the brain and other endorphines/hormones/chemicals. This would lead me to believe that teenagers, during puberty, would need a ton of sleep "to function optimally."

I have always wished I could teach myself to sleep like a whale, but I don't think I'm going to be able to figure it out ;)

Growth - psychological, mental, and physical. As a child matures, they nap less and feed less (until they reach teenager then they eat you out of house and home...)

The stress thing is a lie... the older they get the more stressful, if it were simply a stress thing, all children would be smothered in their beds by age 10.

Did I mention I have a 19 and a 15 year old.... :D

Pfft, I am 18 and sleep a average of 2-3 hours a night, not all teenagers need lots of sleep :P
What you and your body need to be healthy, and what you get, are two different things.

Generaly, it's because of how much energy they need to grow. You do most of your growing when you're asleep.
