Why is there no Gen-Con East, anyhow?

Or Alaska, even. At least in all my atlases. ;)
Even better. That way, gamers won't get all distracted by exotic, multi-ethnic island babes in bikini and guys in surf-gear in a warm, sunny environment suitable for surfing, water-skiing, jet-skiing, scuba diving, or just plain sunbathing. You wouldn't want to darken your already pale complexion.

:p

Hopefully, we can stomach another dentists' convention at the Hawaii State Convention Center.

Is it possible he wasn't talking about geography, but culture? As in, Chicago more closely resembles New York or Philly in outlook and attitude than say, Des Moines, Lincoln or Boise?

Still wrong. Chicago is Chicago. Chicago is NOT some east coast city and nobody who knows and loves the town will lump it in with that crowd. Chicago is the premier Midwest city, always has been, always will be. Lumping it in with those east coast things betrays great ignorance of Chicago and great ignorance of the Midwest.

I went to Gen Con East.

In 1983 in Cherry Hill NJ if I remember correctly.

Held on a university campus (don't remember which one).

No idea why they stopped it.

I was there too. I was twelve years old, but I was there.

They probably stopped it because I acted like a brat during a game of Bushido with the game's creator. My bad.

That would be a 'No', then? :)

Yep. There are exactly two cities i've ever been in that i would visit again for the city (as opposed to because of friends or something else that happened to be in the city), much less live in, and they are Chicago and Minneapolis/St. Paul. And given that the the Twin Cities are less than a million--even the whole surrounding area just barely hits 2mil--i'm not sure they count as "cities". WHile i can't describe it tangibly, Chicago feels *very* different from Philly, NYC, Boston, Atlanta, or any other east-coast (or, for that matter, west-coast) city i've ever been in. 'Course, it also feels pretty different from St. Louis, Indianapolis, or Milwaukee, IMHO.

I'd love to see a Gencon in Boston! We have a large city, as someone mentioned, New England is very densely populated, plus there are a large number of universities in New England, which tends to mean more gamers. I would suspect that in terms of numbers of gamers, Boston is pretty high up there. We support a ton of local gaming stores, if that's any indication!

Plus, we have a decent number of convention facilities, including the Hynes, which would be plenty big enough for Gencon, and our hotels are much more reasonably priced than, say, NYC.
