Why no WOTC support for Greyhawk?

An excellent question/response, RogueAttorney.

I started this thread out of pure curiosity, not as a complaint. The current situation just seems strange to me. It's the default setting, yet so very little attention is paid to it. To me it would make more sense to just drop Greyhawk and move on OR to publish something Greyhawk-specific once in a while. An academic observation, not a passioned plea.

(Well, it's not just curiosity. A friend of mine is an FR fanatic, so I like to talk about Greyhawk every chance I get just to irritate him).

Yeah, my that post I copied from the WotC board was in response to some passioned pleas.

I agree with you. WotC's handling of Greyhawk is curious. It almost seems designed to cause consternation. To Greyhawk afficianados, the "default setting" thing now looks more like a tease than any real committment to the setting, and I wouldn't be surprised if it quietly went the way of the dodo just stop some of the fan griping.

Having a bit more mention in the various supplements would be nice, but given a choice between what we have now and the support that FR gets, I'll stay right where we are now. Be carful what you ask for, if we old-timers get to uppity WotC might release 3.5 stats for the Master Wolf series.

Ultimately it must have to do with whether WotC thinks they can make money off of Greyhawk supplements. Evidently they don't think such material would sell very well.

That maybe be part of it but I think the continuity nightmare Greyhawk represents is also a factor. When I was at WotC, very few designers wanted to deal with GH for that reason. And now the folks who were most willing to--Sean Reynolds, Roger Moore, and Erik Mona--no longer work at WotC. I do note that Erik is sticking it to the Man by doing more GH content in Dungeon though, so there is some "official" outlet for it.

Don't know that I'd call it 'dumbed down'...
Heck, just reading it got me all Greyhawk fired up again :)

I wouldn't call it that either, qstor did. I agree, it perked me up a bit as well.

There might be more truth to that than I would like to see :p Since Greyhawk is such a historic setting and having the names of EGG, Kuntz and others behind it the whole world and the next planet would try to backstab WotC if they would mess up a, say, revised Greyhawk campaign setting book or anything else. Everyone that'd knew the old books would then wish the Wizards would never have released such a thing...quite the opposite of a situation as we have it now :o

The other problem is that Greyhawk is the term "canon" incarnated. I dont think there is another rpg setting that has such a lot of discussion on what belongs to the setting and what not. Talk about fragmentation :\ I think there are at least 4 different camps fighting about what exactly Greyhawk is....

I think that the 'fans' killed it as much as WotC. At least from what I've seen on messageboards. Nothing is good enough for GH, even Erik Mona got harrassed because he did stuff for GH, basically just because he isn't Gygax.

Gygax doesn't even want to work on GH, and thats what the loud GH grognards would accept, so there you have it. Better to just fugeh 'bout it :\

I think what everyone would like to see is a hardback like the one the forgotten realms got (the people who worked on it did a great job and I only became a fan of that setting because of that book). I would buy it in a heartbeat :D
