Why Not a 4th Book?

Why not a Tome of Traps... Portfolio of Perils...

Basically a book filled with Dungeon traps and dangerous situations? I know 3rd party books like this have existed, but why not a core book? Especially when we've seen them mention including traps and dangerous terrain as part of the toughness of an encounter?

I mean if they can have umpteen billion monster books, why not more traps?

Methinks it's time for the triumphal Return of Grimtooth!

(hmmm, does that date me a bit too much?)

No, that's cool. However, have you seenThe Wurst of Grimtooth's Traps ?

Seriously though, I don't think we need a trap book after the core 3. It sounds as if there won't need to be much of anything after that, just Roman numeral extensions. Which now that I think about it, if they a) aren't labelled Core and b) that's all WotC releases every year is PH II, DM II and MM II would be c) darned cool and d) get rid of many of my current concerns on 4E.

Considering I'm started with 3.0, shortly before 3.5 came out and loved "The Wurst of Grimtooth's Traps", which was released May 05... I think no!

On topic: I think you should be able to find stuff like that in the DMG. Especially since magic items are now in the PHB (at least from what I gathered during the first days after the announcement). Without all these items... fill it with fun stuff!

Cheers, LT.

We have a separate monster book though.

If they're making it so traps and hazards are easier to throw into the mix, then why not have a new book devoted solely to them?

They might very well be able to in the future.

Tough I suspect the last "encounter book", the 3.0 Book of Challenges, didn't do very well or we'd have seen more of them.

But it wasn't really beautiful. But I think they could couple that with their 'Dungeon Tiles'. Producing tiles with special rules (perhaps printed on the back) - drop in and enjoy!

Probably because it's easier to make 200+ monsters in a couple of sittings. 200+ encounter traps? A little more challenging.

There's only so much one can do.

How is it different then designing monsters?

I mean really the big difference in monsters is the flavor. I mean whats the real difference between two monsters if they both have a claw/claw bite attack that does the same amount of damage?

The same would be true about traps.

Because there's only so many things you can have something pop out of a wall.

From what they're saying about monsters in 4e, each one is unique. I just think it's easier to do that with monsters than with 200+ traps. It's much easier to step on the toes of the last trap than it is to step on the toes of the last monster, because there are just way more monster books out there cram packed with unique monsters than there are trap books.
