Actually, I believe there's at least one comic from the 70s that shows him with the "perma-grin." It's one of issues from The Joker series that features a conflict with The Creeper. I know it's reprinted in the earlier editions of The Greatest Joker Stories Ever Told and Stacked Deck. Given how much of a fan you are, Klaus, you can confirm as I'm certain you have at least one of those books.

Yes, much of the canon describes The Joker's grin as being a fixation of his facial muscles, not just him smiling a lot. I hadn't considered it being important either way.

Didn't like Keaton. Didn't like Jack. I think the big problem with portraying the Joker is the temptation to personify him through quips and capering, like Burton did. Personify him through actions--insane, inhumanly sardonic actions. I didn't see the bank robbery trailer, so hopefully it fits the bill.

In the trailer, the Joker looks a little outgunned. That could also be problematic. The Joker has a bunch of knives. Bats has a motorcycle with cannons and machine guns. Doesn't Batman dislike guns?
