Widescreen -- used often?

OK, OK. I'll see if I can reach for the 7900GS (the next performance to price ratio of note, IIRC) if someone talks me into it. :D It's only marginally more than the 7600GT, and apparently worth the difference. True?

-- and I heard that the 8500 and 8600 are horrible. Also true?

If you plan to play games, especially new releases, don't skimp on the video card. I built my current system about a year ago (AMD Opteron 165, 2GB G.Skill, DFI nF4 mobo, eVGA 7900GT) and the best thing I did was splurge on the video card.

I've been playing DDO, Company of Heroes, STALKER, and now LotRO with max resolution/max effects and it's been awesome. It's the only way to fly.

My monitor is starting to die (CRT) and I need to get a new one, but all I can find these days is widescreen. I guess it's progress, but I wish they gave a choice.

Samsung SyncMaster 203B and 204B are both very good 4:3 LCDs.

GlassJaw, I am a-fearin' you're right there. And you probably are. :(

After checking out tomshardware again (which I should've done, again) - thanks, Thanee - the X1950XT is looking pretty sweet, for the cost - even locally.

I'll also try and determine how much 512+ vs. 256MB of gddr3 is going to matter. . .

And hey, if I have to wait a month or so to add some funds, that's fine. I'll go WS though, I think. :)
