Wierd Wars: Dead from above

Librarian, Geologist, and Referee
Just picked up Dead from Above and I like what I see. It adds a new class to the game, the pilot. They also included new feats primarily for piloting and gunnery in dogfights. There is a mini adventure aboard a B-17G called Memphis Blues and a beasteary with death clouds and gremilins.

What I am most interested in is the new air combat rules and I believe that Pinnacle has delivered. Now, I should qualify this by saying that I have not yet done a dog fight but the simplicity of this abstract system puts the Star Wars rules to shame. The system is based on position expressed as a number from 0 to 10. The higher the number the greater your advantage in the form of altitude, speed, and aspect. Initiative comes into play if you have multiple players sharing the same position otherwise a lower position number goes before a higher one. Lower positions cannot attack aircraft holding higher positions. All attacks and maneuvers cost position. So, record keeping is kept at a minimum. You do need to track aircraft hitpoints and ammo but that is about it. The one thing that strikes me most is the simplicity. The only caviat that I can see is large scale combat, many flying fortresses and escorts fighting off many german intercepters. I believe that grouping planes would become a necessity but I believe the system strong enough to handle it and not take away from the game. It's too fluid.

Anywho, just thought I'd share. Has anyone else seen it or used it? I would be interested to read what you think.

No gaming group for a while, MUST have dogfighting...

Just a quick bump to see if anyone has run these rules yet.

Okay, it's lonely and dark in here. I'm scared and the wolves are chasing me...

Is there anyone anywhere who as at least looked at these rules or who cares? And before you ask, no, I have not been able to get my group together to try these rules, hence the histeria.

Thanks Trance, nice to know I'm not alone here. I should have a chance to play in the next week or so. I will post something then.

D&D this weekend, no Wierd Wars. I have had a hard time getting anyone to play this game. I am beginning to think I am the only one I know who is interested in it. I hate that!

Well, the game must be selling well enough. Pinnacle is apparently now planning several more books in the line, focusing on other wars. And they have a magazine style thing to support it in the works.

Anyway, have you thought of D&D cross over? The latest Elric novel actually involves WW2. Given how Nazis tried to track down ancient relics & magic items, they could potentially turn up in a fantasy world by accident

I must say the idea of a crossover never entered my mind. There are so many interesting story ideas just with the Third Reich that the idea of crossing them with D&D seemed unnecessary.

Well, that is not exactly true. I did have many ideas going the other way with D&D characters stepping into sci-fi with a Nazi twist. I will say that the idea is food for thought anyway.

Thanks for the heads-up, by the way. I'll look for that product, as I've integrated a lot of Pinnacle stuff into my ever-evolving Dark*Matter/Alternity d20 adaptation.

I lik eWeird Wars, but I think my group would rebel at yet another setting. And the chance to play their own screwed up selves in Dark*Matter is too juicy for them to ignore.

Jonrog1, Nice to know you have an interest in Weird Wars. I love your Alterninty/Dark Matter story hour and would love to see what you would do with the setting. By the way, I have not been able to find your story hour since we moved to the new boards. Have you posted and if so where can I find it?

I found it! Thank you, thank you.
