D&D 4E Will 4E be announced?

There's definately going to be hell to pay for WotC at Gencon with the release of the 4E news (I wouldn't bother calling it a rumor actually. We all know it's true in our hearts. The only question is how bad will they f it up if it goes to the GAMES WORKSHOP model of sales?)

My guess is that it will be about the ONLY thing talked about at GenCon if more info comes through.

While I agree that it is too early for a 4th edition. There are flaws in the game that i would like to see addressed. Thus 4th edition will need to come eventually. What I see alot of poeple saying is that 3.x is good enough for them. And this is true. However what if 4th edtion is significantly better? Despite the books I have purchase of 3.x I would jump on board.

I take it your heart hasn't read the rest of the thread, in which Eric explains that he was contacted directly by WotC and that the rumor is utterly false?

Pure damage control ;)

I vote for next spring for the announcement. We will hear nothing but reassurances that a 4th edition is a long way off at this year's GenCon.

Just like all those rumors about layoffs at WotC a few years back, when WotC people actually posted to EN World that it wasn't going to happen... ;)

The answer is no. There is, frankly no need. These are, as Obi Wan would say not the rumors you are looking for. Move along. We, that is, the gaming community are not the targets of these rumors. I suspect, as was the case for the original rumors last year, unoffical of course, around Gen Con, the target of the rumors is none other than third part developers themselves.

Last year, I was told through that freelance writers were getting good hints that there was going to be a 4th edition and that it would not have the OGL attached to it. This year the rumors are stronger, and with Monte deciding that now is the time to get back to writing fiction, there may be a tremor in the third party d20 market. The long term prospects for d20 and OGL supplements is now severely in doubt.

To this extent, this might be the best of all possible worlds. It might mean that they are in fact working on 4E, (and thus the rumors, even Microsoft can't stop rumors on all their projects) but not at the rushed pace some people were fearing. They might be actually doing it right in terms of development. Or, as I suspect, they are leaking these rumors to squash the growing trend in low cost (and low price) electronic books. WOTC's own answer to the PDF is to offer their own at the outrageous price of a hard copy book, clearly indicating that they want to crush this new medium for gaming materials completely.
