Will the real Mike Mearls please stand up?

#1) Opinions change. Views on a variety of topics can shift over the course of time for any number of reasons

#2) Full time game designers actually make their living doing what most of us goof around with as a hobby. Its much easier to be unwavering and honest about what you like and don't like when the subject matter doesn't play a role in paying your rent or feeding your family.

#3) This is why IMHO some of the very best gaming products are made by hobbyists who want to share their stuff with fellow gamers rather than corporate product cranked out to turn a profit.

It seems kinda obvious that Mike Mearls does not like classic D&D very much. He's a different breed of Role-player and he helped create the latest "new D&Ds". He is now under pressure to save the D&D franchise and so he compromise his vision (and pretend to like stuff he probable hates).

The game produced is what matters, not what his opinions were years ago. Its not like he is running for office or something.

This bit in particular I find frankly disturbingly cynical, in addition to being the complete opposite of what he's saying now...
It's neither disturbing nor cynical.

Is it weirding you out that the guy who despises Keep on the Borderlands and coined the term "Mother May I?" is now singing the praises of old school D&D and "rulings not rules"?
It's no weirder than the fact 7 years ago I was really enjoying running 3e and now I'm really enjoying running AD&D --and I can sing both their praises and point out their faults.

Or that 20 years ago I was playing/running a lot of AD&D/2e while admiring, but playing relatively little Champions/HERO.

FYI... I don't think too much of KotB, either.

I would like to see him talk a bit about how dramatically his opinions about RPGs have apparently changed.
I wouldn't. I imagine the chat would go something like this, "I changed my mind. I'm interested in different things right now". The end.

Until then I think I'm going to have to take everything he says as DDN team lead with a pinch of salt from now on.
Or you could just evaluate the things he's currently saying and see what you think of them.

I don't think you're in a position to speak for Mearls. One of our rules here is to not ascribe intentions to other members, and that's what you're doing here. Please don't.

If it makes you feel any better, I've known Mearls for over 15 years and he likes classic D&D just fine. That was really clear back when we were playtesting Iron Heroes. I can also sympathize a little. The funniest thing I have ever written on EN World, maybe in my entire life, was a thread to Nemmerle on the old boards where I got to mock Fiend Folio monsters and illustrations. I happen to love the FF, but anyone reading that thread would have trouble believing it. Eh - loving something means you recognize its warts and accept it anyways.
