Window XP service pack 2.

I'm running it now. The biggest visible "improvement" is the addition of the "Security Center" which features an improved firewall, pop-up protection, and allows for mangement of windows updates downloaded via the internet. Most other changes are minor or invisible.

Oh and it's stable. I had some issues with the Beta (XP not recognizing I had anti-virus software installed, etc.), but those have been resolved with subsequent patches.

I'm in Mass. surpised I don't have it yet. I go to the Microsoft update site once a day, I also have my XP set to download updates and inform me when they are ready to install. Service pack 2 does not show up for me when I go to the update page. I know Microsoft is rolling it out to different areas at different times.

Microsoft is doing a "phased rollout" of XP SP2, both so corporate IT departments can get up to speed with it (the security enhancements have a good chance of breaking some things), and to keep their download servers from getting overwhelmed (the full version of XP SP2 is over 250 MB).

MSDN subscribers (like me; typically people who write Windows software for a living) had the first crack at it, as of last Friday. Then people who had installed pre-release versions of XP SP2 (as of yesterday) got to see it on Windows Update. But the general-release Windows Update version won't be out for a few more weeks. Note that if you don't have broadband, you should wait for the Windows Update version, rather than trying to download the MSDN/corporate 'full version'; the Windows Update download is much, much smaller as its customized for your PC.

I have broadband, so downloading it won't be a problem. SHould I continue to use my firewall, or use the one that comes with SP2?

There's no reason not use the Windows firewall alongside a hardware firewall (it's probably a good idea, actually). As for a software firewall -- if your firewall has been updated to play nicely with XP SP2, and it's quality product (this isn't an area I know a lot about; sorry), then you'll want to disable the Windows firewall, which is meant as a basic product.

A hardware firewall is something like a router, right? How hard is it to set up a router? I do alot of online gaming.

As long as you're not running a server you shouldn't have any problems using a hardware firewall. If you're running a server you'll need to learn how to forward ports to your computer. It's pretty easy, just post here if you need help and someone can walk you through it I'd imagine. I usually recommend Linksys, though lately their firmware has been a bit flakey for some products. I'm using a BESFSR41 v3 with the latest firmware and no problems.
