Window XP service pack 2.

I have the option right below the automatic updates selected for my updates. "download the updates, but let me choose when to install them" Will this auto download SP 2 for me?

I haven't read anything that differentiates automatically installed automatic updates and just automatically downloaded updates, so I'm not sure.

I would guess yes. I think that after maybe a week or so more of this, they are going to open it to whomever hasn't gotten it yet and put it on the windows update site as well. But release dates change all the time and they are monitoring this closely to make sure everything goes smooth.

Yes, it will. I'm using the option "ask before downloading updates", and today it asked to download SP2.

I told it "no thanks". I'm going to let a few million other people test SP2 before I install it.

Hmmm, the firewall in SP2 screws up the download manager in Mozilla Firefox every single time!. I have to turn it off before attempting to download anything.

Then again, the download manager in Firefox has got to be its worst feature, though the extension that allows the use of Get Right has helped quite a bit.

Here's a couple of links that might help you configure the firewall so Firefox's DL manager will work with it.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/columns/cableguy/cg0204.mspx
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/security/internet/sp2_wfintro.mspx

The first one seems to be more thorough, but the second one is more recent.

You know, now that I think about it, why I am I not terribly surprised that SP2 introduces problems for a non-IE browser?

I don't use Mozilla myself (Opera's my browser of choice), but I wonder if maybe the reason it doesn't work is that the DL manager is a plugin or seperate program, so when you grant permission to Firefox that permission doesn't carry over to the DL manager.

BTW, here is a list of programs that Microsoft has admitted have problems with SP2. Definitely worth a look for anyone who hasn't installed SP2 yet. Interestingly, there's quite a few firewall programs on that list.

Although I've downloaded the IT version, I've decided that none of the machines I oversee at home or at work are gonna get the update until it's been out for a month or so and I'm certain it's not going to break any vital programs.

Wow, zone alram, AOL toolbar and yahoo messenger. Think Microsoft is trying to make people stop using other peoples products? Is that a list of programs that don't work with the SP2 firewall, or the whole SP2?
