windows 98 security?

Shard O'Glase

I'm trying to help my dad out and can't figure this out. He has a password on windows 98, but its not required I guess. when you start the computer up, you can just escape past it. How do you change it so you can't get to what's on the computer by just hitting escape.

thanks.

I don't think you can. Maybe if there's an option to force you to press ctrl+alt+del like the NT systems have. However, 98 was never meant to be secure. If someone with a limited amount of computer knowledge wants in they are in (boot to dos...there you go). Upgrade him to XP Pro for all your security needs.

I'm no Windows expert, but as far as I am aware, passwords and user accounts on the non-NT OSes allow for little more than for each user to define their own Desktop and Start Menu settings and organization.

There is no effective difference between user profiles in the 9x versions of Windows; everyone can access the same programs, same files, and the same folders.

As annoying as it is, if you want more secure user profiles, you will probably have to look to Windows 2000, or XP Pro (I don't advise Home, if you can avoid it and it Pro isn't more expensive than you are willing to pay).

As per above, there's really no such thing as Win9x security. It's one of the many reasons why no one should run Win9x if they have a real, legal option not to.

You could just set up a password in the CMOS. As already stated, Win98 doesn't have much in the way of security.
