I sure won't be pirating it....I subscribed to HBO as of this month just for this show....

Ditto. I dunno if HBO will factor DVD sales into their calculations as to whether it gets a second season*, so I wanted to be sure my money went in early.

* I think they do now, after Rome did so well on DVD.

My only concern about production values - which for some could really make-or-break the show - will be how the CGI for
Dany's dragons
turns out. Everything else is mainly earthly (the direwolves, for example, are just bigger dogs/wolves), but spoilered creatures are different.

They've actually already partially spoiled this in some previews. Looked alright to me.

That was simply amazing. I suppose I could write paragraphs about, how good of a novel-to-TV adaptation it was, as well as how gripping the story felt... and yes, they ha d to cut some minor stuff, but it was spot on, they let the background scenery, and/or unspoken scenes tell a lot of the story, (tombs under house stark, dothraki wedding and the sick relationship between Viserys and Daenerys, and the ending.... perfect timing.

More thoughts - I really like how they built up and showed that Jon was a bastard rather than saying it right out (it was always "Father", but "Your Mother" when talking to Bran, except for the self-omitting "Lord Stark, your children..."), and in particular, showing the withering attitude of Catelyn towards him.

I've been a big fan of the novels for a long time, and I think the first episode was near perfect at capturing the feeling of Westeros and the series, and it did a good job of establishing characters and motivations. I hope it was good enough for non-fans to stick around and watch the rest of the series.

I really think the success of the series will depend on the execution of the dynamic challenging of character role assumptions (as GRR does with point's of view in the books), and in that goal, I think they have done a superb job of setting up everyone's expectations with the main characters.

My only complaint would be, why couldn't they have done a two hour premiere? It would have been great to hear and see more on some of the other characters (Theon, Old Nan, Maester Luwen, etc.) to really endear the Stark's to the viewer.

Favorite quote from the show: The line Viserys Targaryen delivers to his sister Daenrys on the eve of her wedding to Kahl Drogo.
