Wizard Specialization, which school?

Don't lose Necromancy if you want to debuff enemies. Necromancy has a number of no save debuff effects that allow you to cripple even hard targets like paladins or monks. If you use Complete Arcane, then there are enough Conjuraction damage spells to mostly make up for the loss of Evocation. I'd give up Enchantment, although the loss of Confusion is a bit painful.

Geez, the only thing I'm getting out of this thread is that WotC has gutted Evocation or at least made sure that the schools schtick is covered by 2+ other schools....

I suggest not to specialize. Even Evocation school has Contingency, which is very effective when combined with buff or utility spells. The lack of extra spell slot can be compensated by the use of magic items (you do not need to spend your own spell slots for most of buff spells, scrolls will do). But if you eternally lose one school, that is a biiiig loss.

Not really.

The poster said he didn't want to play an artillery piece and wanted to focus on buff/debuff spells.

evoc is the school for the artillery. It is still effective (and the most effective throughout its progresion) in that role. People were just pointing outthat WotC has done a beter job of balancing out the spells as 3.5 has progressed, that is to say there is more equality in the number of spells per school and that it is possible to still ahve some decent offensive spells without evoc.

I actually agree with you - Evocation is a naff option for doing damage now, and conjuration (in particular) has been given (wrongly IMO) a lot of direct damage spells which match or exceed Evocation.

Granted, but there is still some cosy familiarity about Fireball and Lightning Bolt.
Heh, heh.

this was a friendly reminder that Robberbaron spanked us with a specialist evoker on Sunday night :)

My bad

Transmutation specialty, dropping Evocation and enchanting. I just thought a lot of Necromancy was too good to give away, and I like illusions.
