Wizards, Alertness, Familures, and the Alienist

Does a wizard with a familure meat the requirements for the Alienist? or does he have to take Alertness? And do the effects stack from having a familure with alertness and having a familure?

Thanks

A familiar only grants Alertness when within arm's reach of its master. A very lenient DM might let you use that ability to take a PrC that requires Alertness, but you would instantly lose all those PrC abilities whenever your familiar were more than a few feet away from you.

In short, you need to take the feat. Since you can only gain Alertness once, having the actual feat does not stack with the familiar ability.

Because of the Alertness being spatially-dependent, I would highly recommend taking the feat, although, by the letter of the rules, you technically have the feat when your familiar is within arms reach.

However, as hammymchamham points out, you would lose all abilities of the PrC when your familiar leaves within arms reach distance or if it was killed - a fairly dangerous weakness, especially with the alienist's fear hindrance.

In my campaigns I rule that Alertness can effectively be taken 2x - and only 2x - and that (obviously) the second application stacks with the first. The second alertness I dub "elf senses" which requires alertness as a prereq and gives the unnamed +2 bonus to both spot and listen. In the special section of the feat I say that this feat can count towards satisfying the requirement of having alertness.

This is fair to the rest of the world in that anyone can select it twice and benefits those with a familiar.

See if your DM will adopt the house rule.

I didn't point that out, AuraSeer did

If I have made an error, it would be more constructive if you would point it out. Making a snarky, content-free reply is usually considered rude.

How many famies could a familure lure, if a familure could lure famies?:D

On another note, I would agree that you need to actually take the feet in order to get the Prc. Unless you trick your DM into allowing a tapeworm familiar. Then you never have to worry about it being away from you.

Although, an intelligent tapeworm in your stomach/bowels would, well, that would be interesting...

Ah you must suffer from frequent troll attacks ...I am sorry,no that was not directed at you,I was merely tweaking the nose of my good friend hammy, you see we discussed this very matter last night in the car on the way back from our session and I told him much the same that you did.

So I was rubbing the pigs nose in the dirt in a playful manner.
