Wizards getting 4 skill points per level

In our games as well, we add at least +2 Skill Points to each class per level. We run skill heavy games and we have difficulty seeing the class/skill system as it is in many cases as the skill system is too restrictive in many cases such as Fighters. You cannot make an educated myrmidon with the core fighter who gains a whopping 2 skill points per level, barely even able to train in physical skills much less skills like tactics, military history, etc.

As for Wizards in specific, I dont see where the extra 2 points is bad. Wizards ARE scholars afterall. They should have a lot of knowledge and ability to use their skills. 2+INT (max of 6/level in most cases) doesnt actually get you very much, even with the limited skill selection of the wizard.

In our games we have given the Wizard an advantage over some other classes granting 6+INT skill points and expanding the skill list to:

Appraise (Assess Magic Item, Item History only), Bluff (Disguise Spellcasting, Spell Bluff only), Concentration, Craft, Decipher Script, Diplomacy, Knowledge (Any), Profession, Search, and Spellcraft.

YMMV

I think wizards are about the last class (on par with the cleric) of the 2 SP/lvl classes, which I would give 4 SP/lvl to. :)

I'd rather give the sorcerer, fighter or paladin more SP to play with.

The +2 SP/lvl limited to knowledge skills seems like a good idea, tho.
The scientist in d20 Stargate has an ability like this, too.

Well, the elven wizard I ran was able to max out Concentration, Spellcraft, Search*, Spot*, Listen* and Tumble* (* cross-classed) and still have a couple points left over for the odd knowledge skills. With an 18 Int, he had 6 skill points per level. I felt I had plenty to work with, and took advantage of his ability scores and racial modifiers to gain more than adequate skills. So, I don't think that a bump in a wiazard's skill points are necessary.

A decent wizard should have a high Int bonus and thus be getting lots of bonus skill points per level. There is no reason at all for you to give them more than the 2+int bonus per level. This is a very bad change, IMHO.

As Thanee points out, it makes much more sense for Sorcerers or some of the other classes to get a skill point bump before the wizard.

Wizards already have a couple of "required" skills - ones that are so essential to class performance that there is a very strong incentive to max them out. Concentration, Spellcraft, and Knowledge (Arcana).

In my opinion, a wizard is both sage and spellcaster and so should also have at least two or three other very strong Knowledge skills (The Planes, History, and Local) and a few half-maxed ones (Nature, Architecture/Engineering, Nobility, Dungeoneering). Alchemy is nice to have as well, and to properly use some item creation feats you need Craft. Loremaster is really a very good option for wizards looking for more skill points, as you don't lose much.

I'd give all classes an extra 2 skill points per level, to encourage greater use of the lesser-used skills (such as Knowledge and Profession) as well as some more adventure-oriented obstacle-solving skills (such as Balance or Decipher Script). I like skill checks, and I don't mind PCs having a few that are so good they sometimes don't need to roll.
