Wizards in a rough patch?

Uh, Dark Sun was NEVER a 1e setting, it came out in 1991, as a setting for 2e.
I'm pretty sure Greg meant the first edition of the boxed campaign setting (TSR 2400) compared to the second edition of the box (TSR 2438) :).

Edit: Like he said :D!

LOL! :) Now that's what I call "weird".

Turjan,

That's what I'm talking about. I honestly could care less if people deride a series or campaign setting. If it sells, then that's all that matters. (So yeah I like Midnight more than Dawnstar/Dragonstar/etc. Go figure.) To me all these people that say "No!!! It's horrific! You're destroying Dark sun!!!" makes me go "Good grief. Look if you don't like it the new way, then BUY the old stuff. You can't have it both ways!" That's where I gripe.

*still finds it weird since one box set was pretty much like another in those days...* I mean it was a friggin BOX!!!

You are sure you know what you are talking about? Let's take this text from the second box:

"About This Revision

Change has been the driving force in the world of Athas since the original DARK SUN campaign set Leas introduced in 1991. From the moment the box was opened and the first player characters were created, the world began to change. Moreover, it wasn’t the static, nominal evolution experienced by other game worlds. Significant transformations totally altered Athas in ways that the original boxed set never addressed."

And you bet that that's right ;).

Well maybe they SHOULD have been addressed. :p I mean what did they expect to NOT evolve along side DL, FR and the rest?!

WIngsandsword.

Actually, I dislike the majority of 3.X releases from WOTC, because despite the improved mechanical aspect of core 3e, I detest the feel that WOTC introduced. I would rather that the designers kept the old school feel in the core books and saved "kewel" weapons designed specifically for 3.X and inspiration from comic books, videogames, and anime for specfic supplements designed to capture the feel of those genres. This is why I find the majority of content in WOTC supplements worthless, the only non core book from WOTC that I currently own is the Unearthed Arcana and the only other currently released products that I would consider buying from WOTC are Complete Warrior, Stormwrack, Dragonomicon, and Lords of Madness.

Well, as the quoted text says, it wasn't an evolution. "Significant transformations totally altered Athas". That's completely different from the FR. And I don't like DL, so that's no counterexample for me.

Wingsword,

Just face, Greg is a greybeard.

Turjan,

Okay well you're entitled. I just think things happen. If you don't want things to change, go to Kenzer. :p :) (Sorry guys!)

Actually, I find it funny that you have this position. Overly generous change that completely turned the setting inside out was what killed the Scarred Lands for me. Obviously, many people felt the same. If the authors deliberately destroy the feeling that brought the fans to the setting in the first place, they will have to live with the consequences.

I'm a DS fan. A deluxe DS book was my wish in the "What do you think WotC should be making?" thread. I see the problems with how exactly this book would have to look like in order to please the fans, though.
Heh. I have never heard of a "deluxe" setting book, at least one published by WotC. Heck, not even TSR.

It's funny, actually, that you talk about "anime" inspirations (which I must say, in the interests of full disclosure, I absolutely don't see in revised Third Edition products - and I would see it if it were there, because I'm severely allergic to anime) and then mention you'd consider buying Complete Warrior, which is one of the only revised Third Edition supplements I can think of that arguably takes any inspiration from anime movies and shows - the kensai prestige class.

(Whether or not the kensai in Complete Warrior closely represents the anime "tradition" is another question entirely.)

In any case . . . D&D shouldn't restrict itself to the tired imitations of Tolkienesque pseudo-medieval fantasy that was its stock in trade in the Seventies and Eighties. There's actually nothing wrong with taking inspiration from other areas of speculative fiction - whether it be old-school Howard-and-Leiber sword-and-sorcery or truly contemporary fantasy with a "modern" attitude towards weirdness and variety.
