- or maybe not.

The latest edition of Guardian Tech Weekly interviewed the Development Manager of the DDI brand at the GDC in San Francisco recently:

Tech Weekly | Technology | guardian.co.uk

Executive Summary:

DDI thinks Brainwave controllers will be big.
DDI have little use for 3D rendering engines.
They liked the Seminars on using Social Networking to build the D&D Brand and make it better through feedback.

To clarify, it wasn't DDI giving the seminars, they just liked what they heard about how to use social networking on the net.

The short interview starts at 17 minutes in.

next year a new tech for giving real time ray tracing for 3d art AND games engines comes out, x200 faster than any current ray tracer.
That will blow the SOCKS off games and web-3D items.
To ignore that potential = dumb.

Next Big Future: Computer Graphics Rendering Breakthrough: 200 times faster Ray Tracing for 2010

Caustic Graphics Inc. (San Francisco, Calif.) is a startup company that claims to have made a breakthrough in the hardware acceleration of ray-traced graphics. Caustic claims a 20 times speedup for better graphics algorithms hardcoded into silicon now and 200 times faster for next generation in 2010.
;)

I'd eat a goblin's underwear if they can get that to work with Vue and other 3D apps! :p

As with most "Super tech, next year" I'll wait until it exists and is purchasable before getting excited about it. It's stood me in good stead so far. :)

I imagine while DDI said they weren't a big player in 3D they did say they were "Fringe" - so Character Builder and virtual tabletop I'm guessing.
