I might be interested if they had some OD&D content.

Imagine if DDI was not just "All 4th Edition All the Time", but supported every edition of D&D. That would be rather neat.

"Neat"! ... "Neat"! you say? ... Hell, that would be the absolute ultimate in COOL! I'd be willing to pay $20.00 a month for a subscription if they provided exactly that. Even if Dragon and Dungeon were still 90% 4E content, with just conversion info added on, it would be well worth $20/month to me. Just imagine a character builder and compendium for every edition - or even bonus flexibility to modify the character builder for houserules - Man, that would completely kill any possible competition from this sort of product forever, and give D&D players exactly what they've wanted since the invention of the D20. Couple that with the 3D virtual gametable (if it ever actually gets made) and their possible, future, social networking applications, and they could dominate the internet as far as D&D goes.

Of course, since they technically don't even have fully functioning support for 4E yet, if ever, and whether an acceptable business proposal or not, they may not even have the technical proficiency to pull it off. But oh well, here's to pie-in-the-sky dreams.

What the hell?!>?>!

I only got these questions:

Do you currently play DnD?
How old are you?
Gender?
What region do you live in?
What website fif you find this link on?

THANK YOU WoTC for NOTHING!

There is a reason why I only use products from Green Ronin now.

But here's the thing - you can subscribe for a month, get the Character Builder as it exists now, then if you don't buy any books until PHB3, subscribe for the month PHB3 comes out, and you now have the PHB3 data (and ALL data from EVERYTHING to that point). Given that the monthly rate, even if you only subscribe for a month, isn't that much, this seems way better for us as consumers to me than them selling the base unit, then individual data sets for each book. I can't see the "base program plus expansion pack" model costing any less than the "sub occasionally when a book comes out you want to have in the program" model.

YOu need to be careful if you do this though.

If you should need to re-install the Character builder and you are not subscribed, you will not be able to upgrade from the demo version to the full version. That is only permitted if you have a current subscription.

I imagine that they used split paths on the questions based upon the answers. The answer to #1 is very likely a big reason.

And, did you feel they owe you something (other than a survey) that would make you mad enough to CAP-SCREAM at them? Huh....

I am guessing you said that you don't currently play D&D, so they felt that the rest of the questions about 4e D&D and DDI aren't relevant and your answers would skew the results in a way that isn't helpful to meeting the needs of those that DO play D&D.

Just a guess, though.

Yah, I remember the thread. In fact... I think I may have even started it.

The retarded monkey I'm referring to is the committee :)

I just wanted to put a face to it, and I don't like monkeys being compared unfairly to commitees. Even if the monkey is retarded! Moneys are people, too! ;)

Neat it would be, the question is: Could they afford it?

The Character Builder works great for 4E. It won't work for 3E that easily. Nor or OD&D or AD&D.

The Dragons & Dungeons are full of of crunch and fluff. The fluff can be used with every edition, the crunch just for 4E. Who will write new crunch for every edition? New monsters, powers, spells, feats, non-weapon proficiencies, kits? Who would do that. Who pays them? Who will buy it?

Maybe they could channel the creativity of the old fans into a digital initiative, leaving the support for older editions be wholly user generated. Making the WotC site the go to for any edition, but having the official support be for the current edition.

The major obstacle would be choosing what material goes up, and what does not, I imagine.

Who pays them?

That's another obstacle. Are fans of old editions likely to just give WotC stuff for an all edition web site such as the one I mention above? Not likely, since it seems that several of the fans of the older editions are somewhat antagonistic towards WotC in general.

/M

Was I the only one who found the version list a bit off?

First Edition (1974)
Second Edition (1989)
Third Edition (2000)
Fourth Edition (2007)

I guess WotC is categorizing everything prior to 2e AD&D as "First Edition." :hmm:

I think that they're dealing with the "Advanced" editions of D&D only, which are the only editions that D&D 3x and D&D 4e claim to be descended from.
