Wolves As A Wizards Familiar

Idea: the wolf could have grown up with the wizard/sorcerer and be could somewhat of a pet/familiar. just a suggestion

Just give the character a normal wolf and require the improved familiar feat. Master gains +3 on survival checks.

Complete Warrior has a Worg as familiar with the Improved Familiar feat... so start with a puppy worg at level 1

There's a feat from the WotC site called Wild Cohort that lets you get an animal companion (slightly less powerful than a druid's, IIRC).

AFAIK, UA has a Wild Mage rules variant (just a wizard who gets an animal companion instead of a familiar, as a druid of x levels lower)

Yes, Unearthed Arcana has a variant rule that allows wizards and sorcerers to trade in their familiars for an animal companion (treat as druid of one-half their class level). They don't use the name Wild Mage, though (which would probably make people think of chaos magic).
