Wonderfalls - Cancelled

It does sorta bring up the "Is it better than not doing it at all?" question. On one hand, Fox gives chances to a lot of shows that aren't getting chances on CBS or ABC or NBC. But they're not really GOOD chances, given the way Fox treats them. I don't know whether "Wonderfalls" was shopped to other places, but I remember watching the Clerks Series DVD with the commentary from Kevin Smith about how the Clerks Series had gotten a season-long commitment from UPN, but the folks at ABC said, "Listen, UPN isn't gonna be around for another year. Come with us. Do you wanna be on a tiny little network like UPN, or do you wanna be on one of the big guys?"

The answer, in retrospect, is, as Kevin Smith said, "XXXX the brass ring. Take massive support and appreciation from a small place that's going to appreciate you instead."

The station that currently gets the most Tacky-points is USA, oddly enough. I don't generally think of myself as a USA-watcher, but they keep "Monk" and "Dead Zone" on the air with the small-season format, and they promote them whenever a new season is rolling around, and they don't, that I know of, mess around with the show or force episodes to be shown out of order. USA ain't perfect, but it appears to be a good place for a quirky show to grow some viewers.

Dunno. Food for thought. Not like it's a choice I'll have to make any time soon. :)

Interesting. I never watched USA at all. Until they started showing the unaired eps of Karen Sisco, a show that ABC axed. I don't think I ever ranted about that around here, tho. I should have. :)

The only CBS show is "CSI".
Well here's some real irony for you. CSI was almost cancelled during it's first season. They had it on Friday night to only mediocre ratings. They then moved it to the same "death slot" as Fox moved Wonderfalls, Thursday at 9:00, but thanks to the strong lead-in of Survivor people actually started to watch it rather than switching over to NBC's "must see TV" (CBS was really smart and actually started CSI the second Survivor ended at 8:58 rather than running commercials and hooked people in with the catchy beginning and lively theme song). Kris and I actually watched CSI when it was in the Friday slot and were sure it would be cancelled, since most shows we like are.

That's odd - My wife and I've watched CSI since episode I when I debuted, and our CBS affiliate launched it at 10:00-11:00pm Thursday nights. They moved it to the 9:00pm slot during the first season, but I never remeber seeing it at Fridays unless it was (in the past year) a special rerun. Thursday is a prime slot, no doubt, but mostly the same crowd watching "Wonderfalls" from what I've seen locally is also watching "CSI", so in my perspective it WAS the death slot. I watched CSI last thurs. with my wife, and taped the last WF to watch later. At this point, any show running against CSI is in a "death slot," just like 8pm is with "Friends."

When Friends leaves this year, NBC will have lost that stranglehold on thursdays, because frankly Will & Grace is funny, but not strong enough to hold that solid core of viewers like Friends did.

Strangely, both Friends and E.R. were shows like Sienfeld that took a season to build a following. Anyone in Network-executive-land notice that some of the biggest power-hitter shows leaving the air WERE NOT strong first-performers? Four episodes, not even during Sweeps, are enough to give ANYONE an idea of how a show is going to do long-term!

Ah, well. Time to go watch my reruns of "Myth-busters" and wait for the next season of "Monk" - and those last ep's of Angel, darn it.
