Woo-hoo! Heroes of Horror preview!!

I really liked the old Complete Book of Necromancers in 2nd Ed. Does this book include similar rules for things like using twisted magic and having the spellcaster become more corrupt the more he uses it? Is that what the taint is?

Also, the type of horror the book fixates on...is it simply "Slasher Film" horror, or does it delve into psychological horror, etc.?

It's gothic horror, man. Ravenloft-type stuff.

*shudder* I think I just had an evilgasm. :)

So much wicked badliness and two (TWO!) new base classes! I really like the flavor of the archivist; I think a campaign with clerics dumped (or used in a more paladinesque 'holy templar' manner w/ the true paladin as a PrC) would be.... *dreamy sigh* Just add 'Unseelie Fey' to the list of creatures affected by Dark Knowledge & it's perfect. I hope the Dread Necromancer is as good (though I do have to wonder about the 'Dread' modifier. Is there a Fearful Necromancer that's slightly less terrible? Perhaps even a Mildly Annoying Necromancer? Maybe we needed to distinguish between the Dread Necromancer & its counterpoint the Pleasant, Jolly, Warm-Fuzzy Necromancer. :p )

Pleasant, Jolly, Warm-Fuzzy Necromancer.

He's the one who raises undead and dresses them up in cute fuzzy costumes to hug children and man the rides at his cuddly children's theme park.

As for the book--the preview looks great! This could very well be the best book in the Heroes of...series so far (Okay, so there's only two :p).

Well, not exactly--or more accurately, not exclusively. The book doesn't focus on any one "type" of horror. I think it's safe to say that you can use the book for anything from Bram Stoker to Clark Ashton Smith to Wes Craven. :)

This book looks better than what I was expecting actually. I do not dig the un-horror that was Ravenloft, but since this makes amends towards all sorts of horror, I just might take a closer look.

Or simply to distiguish between the new class and a Wizard who specializes in the school of Necromancy?

Mmm. The book sounds like a definite buy, to me.

I have to say that I like these genre books so far. I look forward to finding out what they go into next. I’d be pretty surprised if they don’t put out a politics and intrigue book.

Hmm. On the other side, I’m not sure what else they could do after that. Hrm. Well, hopefully they’ll impress me by coming up with something that makes me go “I can’t believe I didn't think of that before!”

Oh—as for the “Dread Necromancer” prestige class, I suspect the name is to distinguish it from normal necromancers (i.e. necromancy specialist wizards), who... aren’t really all that dreadful. (But I agree that “Dread” is a pretty cheesy adjective.)
