working abroad [serious]

I once again got it into my head that I would like to live somewhere else on the planet.

I am looking for any advice you all can give me on finding a job in an english speaking country? What additional problems I can encounter? (things like visa's and such) What are the various costs of living? (aka what should I earn). What skills are in demand where? etc?

Any advice would be nice :)

From what I understand, it's phenomenally easy to get a job in Japan teaching English, even if you don't know Japanese. A lot of places just want an authentic English-speaker with which they can practice.

Of course, outside of the classroom, nihongo o hanasenakereba, gomenasai.

Maybe I was not clear, but I want to live in an English speaking country. So japan and a tourist job are out!

I am happy if you would just point out the local ( your local ) situation.

beforehand thanks:)

Tourist guidebooks like Lonely planet have good practical starter advice on what sort of jobs are available.

Costs of living vary tremendously, obviously.

In English speaking countries the tourist industry is always a place to look. The work's very seasonal and thus easy to get for a short term, and people who speak multiple languages may be desired.

In Britain and some other countries (New Zealand I think) qualified (CELTA-holding) English teachers may be able to find work in the summer even if they aren't native speaking. Again, the work's very seasonal and the demand for teachers in the summer outstrips local availability.

If you're looking for something a little more serious, then a lot depends on what you're qualified to do. If you're qualified in an area where a country has a shortage, well there are possibilities.

well you could land a job here in Hotlanta. but they speak American here....it ain't Engrish believe me. :p

I don't know if it's going to be easy for use to answer your question - most of us are Americans here, and we may have some experience looking for work for Americans overseas, rather than vice versa.

I'm assuming the Netherlands is part of the EU. My understanding then would be that there are no restrictions on getting employment in other EU countries like the UK or Ireland, etc - meaning no work visa is required.

Getting work in the USA for someone from overseas can be done, but I can't offer any advice on work visas other than to say that perhaps checking with the American Consulate would be a good idea. In fact, that might be a good idea for any country you're looking at.
