That...hack...Bendis...?

These words together...confuse me.

I subscribe to four comics, and Bendis writes three of them (New Avengers, Mighty Avengers and Ultimate Spider Man), so I guess... different strokes?

Must be...because those three are amazing, as well as Illumnati.

Bendis is god. :p

:D No need to get wound up about it mate. I just happen to intensely dislike Bendis' writing of late and his handling of some characters in the Marvel Universe. His dialogue (which many people will defend as hip and realistic :\ ) is cheesy and forced, and nothing compared to what Alan Moore could do. His characterization of some Marvel heroes has been some of the worst I've seen (check out the aforementioned Illuminati for an example). He has reputation as Marvel's top scribe which I think is totally undeserving (that honor I reserve for Ed Brubaker).

I'm not saying the man hasn't done any good work. The first few issues of Ultimate Spider-Man were very well done, as were the random issues of Daredevil that I managed to get a peep of. Even Powers entertained me for a time. But his overbloated reputation as Marvel's It Boy is something that's been bothering as of late.

Its all good. You're allowed to not like him.

Sure, you're crazy, but you're ALLOWED to.

;)

EDIT: Woah woah woah...did you just...just...say Brubaker sucks?

You sir, are from another dimension! Brubaker's Captain America run is probably the best comic that's been running for a long time now.

:\ You misread my post...

I said Brubaker was more deserving of the honor of Marvel's best writer rather than Bendis. Cheers, mate.

Ah. Right.

Reading it slightly distracted and seeing the undeserving next to it and my brain switches off. All is well in the world again.

Not wound up at all :)

As I said, different strokes :)

He has reputation as Marvel's top scribe which I think is totally undeserving (that honor I reserve for Ed Brubaker).

Well, he was the writer who inaugurated both the Ultimate and the Max lines, two important pillars for Marvel's current strategy.

He's also unquestioningly Marvel's top-selling writer. The rest is purely subjective.

As for Brubaker? You won't hear me saying anything bad about him. Remember I said Bendis writes three of the four comics I subscribe to.

The fourth? Captain America, which I have devoured every issue of Brubaker's run and it's one of the best comic runs... maybe ever. It's no Claremont-Byrne X-Men, but what is.

Still, Brubaker is also an awesome writer, along with Millar (who also consistently impresses me and I cannot WAIT for his FF run).

Thank you. This is one of the reasons why I'm a member of this board rather than a forum dedicated to comics such as Newsrama, Comic Book Resources, or Superherohype. You can always count on a reasoned discussion here with people whose opinions are contrary to yours. The other places I mentioned? The moment you criticize a writer or artist they like, they'll whine and moan and gang up on you like a white boy in Compton. :\

Yeah, those places are pretty...crazy.

I've found myself browing the Penny Arcade's Comics forum lately. Its harsh, but there's a bit more intelligence there than I'd have expected.

Honestly, I'm just glad to see more comic readers here on ENWorld. I dump far too much cash weekly on things(only 4 titles? My wallet wishes...) and sometimes I wonder if I'm the only idiot here that does. :)

Well, I only subscribe to 4 comics, but that's far from my only comic-related expenses!

I just find chasing down single issues frustrating. There are delays, writers leave much more quickly than they used to (and I follow good writers more than specific books these days) the occasional crossover issue, etc etc.

So me subscribing to a comic is a sign that I think A) the current writer will be there awhile and B) that I think the book will come out regularly.

For instance, I will subscribe to nothing with Mark Millar's name on it, no matter how much I love his work. Ultimates 2 burned me bad. I subscribed to it in time to get the first issue. Several years later, when it finally was close to being done, I learned the finale would be issue #13, so after waiting all that time I'd STILL have to haul it to a comic shop to track down a single.

So I subscribe to the 4 comics, but have a huge collection of trades, essentials and masterworks that suck up my cash as well.

I also browse back issues for things I read back in the day.

So don't worry, you're not the only one spending too much disposable income on comics ;)
