Worlds Largest City on Amazon

I ordered mine from Amazon awhile ago.

I had enough of an interest to spend $60 or so, but not $100. (Normally, I try to support my FLGS but the discount was too great to pass up.)

Whether I actually get it or not?
Well, that's a whole different story. :heh:

Anyway, what is the "Readibilty" factor? (Whether I'm entertained by a book is normally as much a factor as it's overall usability/usfullness in determing my purchases.)

Is there an overall plot for the book, or is each section pretty much self-contained? (I"m guessing the latter because IIRC each section was written by different writers. :( )

There is apparenlty an overall meta-plot, but there are (very) numerous adventure hooks unrelated to that plot throughout the book.

As for the "readability", the short bits I've read are fine, but I'm sure it will be a matter of taste.

Also, to add to my earlier post, there are indeed no stat blocks throughout the book (except the appendix). They refer you to the Monster Manual for monster stats.

Incidentally, a lot of the book will require work on the DM's part. Despite the size, there is a lot left to the DM to develop. There are several multiclass characters throughout as well as monsters that aren't detailed beyond the very basic. For example, there's a dwarf that is listed as Bard 3/Fighter 1, but there is no stat block pertaining to that NPC. Also, one page lists the monsters as "4 dwarf liches" but no details on their power level is provided.

The appedices in the back has stat blocks for all base classes and all base NPC classes of levels 1-20, which is very handy as a resource, but they are all "race free" so racial modifiers will have to be take into account to use them. However, the spell lists and equipment lists could apply regardless of race, so I think they would be a great resource to determine those aspects of NPCs.

I saw this at my FLGS this weekend and was sorely tempted to get it (I would have, if I hadn't already had an armload full of books by the time I saw it). It was wrapped in plastic, so I couldn't see what it looked like on the inside, but the cover looked pretty nice (I know, I know.. You can't judge a book... yadda yadda yadda).

So... Who wants give me the lowdown on The World's Largest City so that I cannot help but to rush over to my FLGS and purchase it immediately?

It means that your order is being prepared for shipping. Which means that it can't be canceled anymore as amazon.com has fulfillment centers that are the size of eleven football fields and highly automated. Once it "enters the shipping process", it's on a conveyer belt that leads to your house.

I ordered mine in December, got it a few days ago. First impressions only, as school work prevents me from going over it in depth: the maps don't seem to be entirely continuous. Many have gaps between them. There is no table of contents or index. I would ignore this because each chapter is easily distinguished and separated into numbered areas, but I found a prestige class nestled into an area description (the Docks, class is sailor or something). This makes me wonder what other ghostly crunch is lurking. The artwork seems to connect to the text only rarely. On the positive side, the descriptions seem well done, with a variety of feels and power levels. Also, the appendix has stat blocks for 1-20 NPC's of each core class. These might be accurate, might not. Maybe I'll post an update after more experience with it.

If anyone else is like me and has looked for it on Amazon.ca, be aware that you apparently can't find it by searching for either "World's Largest City" or "Worlds Largest City." A search for "AEG", however, turns the book up with AEG listed as the author.
This is part of our Master Plan(TM) to make Canada less appealing to citizens of the United States. See, first we discourage the gamers from migrating North. Next, we figure out how to make Vancouver less appealing to Hollywood. ;)

I think it is very poor form that there is no table of contents or index in the book. There is no excuse for a book that size not to have one.

Yes, the organization alone makes me infinitely more likely to use Ptolus ( a supremely well put together product) over WLC in my game. The rest of the production values compare similarly as well. I recommend Ptolus instead if you really need to spend $100 on a 600+ page city book.
