World's Largest Dungeon: And the verdict is?

No way I am spending 100 bucks on a dungeon crawl. They are nuts for even thinking that people will forego three books to get one dungeon.

Dude, didn't you just three minutes ago (in another thread) complain that game companies aren't making enough adventures?! Why come down on this one?

I think you just disproved that thread's topic. Adventures don't sell because DMs are incredibly picky about what adventures they buy.

Think about it this way. You can either get one dungeon that you might use or buy three unsupported campaign settings that you definately won't use.

I look forward to seeing more products of this size.

Do you think that's even possible? World Largest Wilderness maybe?. Worlds Largest City?

Green Ronin makes wishes come true: Thieve's World is back!!!!

If it were Thieve's Guild that was coming back, I'd be excited.

A hundread dollars is a psychological barrier that I am not willing to violate. Heck, I want the Stargate SG-1 book, but I just cannot see paying 50 bucks for a book.

It does not disprove my argument in the least. I could buy 5 adventures for the price of this one dungeon crawl.

You cannot take my argument that this one book is too expensive and say that this is a reason that adventures won't sell.
:p

Why buy 5 dinky adventures when this book is the equivalent of over 12?

Welll, FWIW, I intend to get it; however, I went in to the main RPG shop in Toronto (HairyT) and they said they would only get it on special order at full list price as it was too expensive to stock otherwise. (at $142CDN)

This means that I'll be getting it through Amazon.

My congrats to AEG for making this product. In a time when adventures are selling poorly - it took NADS the size of grapefruits to dare to do this product. More power to em and I hope they do well with it.

Folks-

I did pass this up at GenCon, admittedly twinging at the price tag. But, I do plan to buy it albeit from a discount vendor rather than full list price. Either way, you do get an incredible amount of gaming goodness for your dollar- I think that is easy to forget without really seeing the size of this book. It literally looks like a hardback phonebook...

Where I was on the fence before talking to the AEG folks at the Con, I am sold now. Let me share a few points which swayed me:
1. The AEG guys realize that most folks will not play this all the way through. They have figured out about how long it would take (over 2 years weekly sessions) but do not expect most groups to do this, rather, to pick out useful sections or encounters. That makes me happy, because that is what I expect to do. It also allows future re-use for as long as you want to pick out pieces.

2. Big sections of the book encounters are grouped thematically (e.g. undead, water encounters, and so on) by area/level of the dungeon. Also, the encounter levels are controlled the same way. To get to the higher difficulty encounters, you need to find keys in the easier areas- that controls the deadliness somewhat without having to constantly juggle encounter levels- which would suck. I am already planning on pulling out the water section for our group as we begin our pirate game.

This book is very cool. Make of that what you will. ;)

Not just levels 1-20, but all the way into Epic, if that's your cup of tea. :)

How much of the dungeon is devoted to epic-level adventuring? Can these areas be easily scaled back to, say, 20th-level adventuring instead of epic?

I know that the regions I worked on are tough, meant for 12-16, roundabouts...however!

Every encounter in the WLD has tips on scaling up or down by two or more levels, to make adjustments for individual DMs' campaigns. So, yes, it can be scaled back. :)

I realize the price tag is a shock - it was way beyond what I expected - but for the cost, you're getting not only 15+ adventures...but each individual regions usually has multiple plots going on in it. That's replayability.

Yes, this proved very convenient in play last night. As soon as I realized the players were having an easy time, I just started applying the scaling tips.
