Worst miniature paint job evAr! Get it off the table!

Hey, the mini painting aspect is a big part of the hobby for some. If a particular table says that's the rule, then there's nothing wrong with that. I was in a slot car club that said you couldn't race unless your car had a little driver inside...then it was up to me to decide if I thought that was dumb and choose whether or not to join. Same goes here.

I think this guy did the equivalent of going to a Trek convention just to make fun of Trekkies.

Having said that: If it was me, and I liked the guy, I'd probably allow a prepainted mini if he didn't want to paint. At least he can go out and buy it himself instead of relying on someone to do it for him.

Is it just me or does it sound like this player has more than once caused some problems and that there is more to this? Every gaming group is different and if you are going to play in a group by agreed group/DM parameters then that is what you play by.

I remember a post from awhile back where the OPer was expressing his dislike for "comedic" names for PCs because he/she thought it took away from serious role playing. There were those that agreed with him while others voiced the opinion it added to the fun (our group belongs to the latter). Right? Wrong? No, just different parameters.

Any game that "required" me to have a painted miniature to play in I would walk way from. Maybe he doesn't like miniatures either and wanted to make a point about the ludicrousnesses of that rule.

Getting upset over it and telling him to take it off the table seems juvenile.

If he can't paint, he can't paint. Let him use a penny or other marker, or whatever else he damn well wants to use, for god's sake. It's his icon.

Then he should have not chosen to play in this game. The miniatures "rule" was not something that suddenly creeped up in the game. It was clearly announced upfront.

And you would have done the right thing. You were presented with a rule that didnt appeal to you and you walked away.

That player however didnt. He knew what the rule was before hand and basically decided to hang around and be immature about it. He had options, he could have told them he didnt like the rule and they probably could have talked it out. If the GM and the other players were inflexable about it he could have just left the game, but he didnt.

Yes and he could have just SAID that instead of acting immaturely.

No what was juvenille was that the player knew what the deal was, was presented with a few options (Someone actually offered to paint a mini FOR him for pete's sake) and he still decided to act immaturely. If the table rules are presented at the outset and you have a problem with it you speak up right then and there and try to sort it out like an adult or walk. What that player did was typical passive-agressive gamer behavior and it would have been unacceptable behavior at my table as well.

I don't agree with the miniature representation rule either but it's not my game or my table, respect the table rules or come to a middle ground. Speak up to get your issue resolved or step off, no hard feelings. But acting out becauses youre unable to discuss things like a mature adult just doesnt fly.

One of my players drew this [attached] up as a joke and sent it to everyone. He got all pissed right away. I think he's having mental issues.

IN any case, the other table rules that we have are:
Bring your own PHB
Bring your character
Bring your own dice, pencil
Bring a painted mini that stands up that is similar to your character

People that can't make at least that kind of devotion to my game where I'm busting my butt as a DM just don't cut it. Cripes, the guy could have bought a painted mini, and now that REAPER is coming out with painted mini's (non-randomized) there's no darned excuse.

I can only imagine what this guy's going to do next...probably bring a d20 MODERN handbook and demand to be able to use guns and crap.

Mini's are an integral part of the game and players who are too cheap to contribute even the basics... I mean what the heck?

We had a guy like this in my first D&D group (early college days). He was just doing it to make people laugh and get attention. After a while, we stopped paying attention to his antics and he stopped doing them.

Seems a silly thing to get upset about for me. As long as the player wasn't being obstreperous in any other way, if he wants to use a funny mini, it's hardly worth getting excited about.

I'm guessing he was trying to push your buttons because, IMNSHO, they're evidently quite easy to press.

Actually, our table rules were developed by the players... but obviously he's just trying to press my buttons.

Is it really too much to ask that players bring a book, character sheet, dice and a freakin' mini? Afterall, we're talking about grown men here with jobs not some homeless cheapass who has a printed copy of the SRD and uses moldy dog food as mini's :P
