WoT Question

First Post
I'm playing an Aiel, Maiden of the spear on our online campaign. After going over the background in the RPG it mentions that Aiel don't ride. It gives no mention as to why. I've only read the first book and half the second in the Robert Jordan series, so there is no mention of Aiel at all yet. Can anyone clerify as to why the Aiel don't ride mounts?

This will probably get moved to d20 system games or the fantasy/sci-fi discussion board, but...

The fourth book explains a lot about the history of the Aiel. They don't ride largely as a matter of pride; their ancestors kept on going long after their riding and pack animals did to make it to the waste. It's not a major cultural taboo; Aiel don't ride, but they don't think it's wrong to ride, and some will if they feel it's necessary. On the other hand, they think it's wrong to even touch a sword, and will never do so.

I forget, do they use horses to pull their blacksmiths wagons?

I remember that the blacksmiths were special and could not be made the prisoner servants in white (forget the term).

This makes me wish I could get someone to play, it is such a good system and a rich world.

Since the question was answered, I won't mind hijacking the thread, does anyone have links to good resources for WoT games and/or online games?

I'm a player in Dave Rothgery's (drothgery) game--Yuri Morotakai.

Good general WoT sites include wotmania and dragonmount.

Eosin the Red's site is good for the WoT rpg, unfortunately I formatted my computer a week or two ago and can't remember the link.

As for the original post: horses require too much water to be used for anything except heavy loads in the Waste (and we haven't seen the equivalent of camels), and the Aiel run just as well anyways. Aiel can learn to ride, as we see later on in the series, but no Aiel will leave the Waste for the first time knowing how.

I do get the sense that it's taboo for the algai'd'siswai (warriors) to ride, but it's okay for children, the elderly, and Wise Ones.

Our campaign doesn't need any at the moment, but my husband put up a pretty good site for it here:

Obviously, we play on the message boards. Only registered Players can post in the Game Forum... but lurkers are welcome, and are free to post in the Game Discussion.
