WotBS versus Scales of War?

I'm probably asking in the wrong place... I say that with humor because I realize that EnWorld publishes WotBS. At the same time, if I know anything about EnWorld, I know someone will give what they feel is an objective answer whether it's popular or not. :]

Anyway, I'm not just trying to stir up trouble. I've got a DDI subscription and therefore access to Scales of War.. but I'm giving some thought to WotBS 4E.

I've looked at Scales of War and I have seen and read some it's limitations, but fans have put together a pretty nice Wiki to help address them as much as possible. I do take those resources into account.

I want to compare it to WotBS. I might be looking in the wrong places, but I'm not seeing any reviews of the 4E version. I know some folks that have played the 3.5 version and had mixed reactions, but I want to look at it from the strictly 4E perspective.

I'm wondering if folks have any experience with both Adventure Paths, and could give me their thoughts, opinions, and reviews.

Thanks!

You might get responses in the EN Publishing forum further down the page.

Sure, no problem. Already done. The only reason I didn't before is because that looked like a support forum, rather than a place for open discussion of general worth.

I was also considering what was said in the Meta Forum when the Pathfinder forums were created. That is, that folks wanted to see certain discussions in the General Forum.

I'm not complaining, and I'm happy to repost down below, but I wanted to explain why I posted here in the first place.

I have not played in Scales of War, but am currently playing in WotBS.

So, all I can offer is this: So far, WotBS is one of the best published adventures I've ever played in.

I wasn't trying to imply you did the wrong thing (either forum would be OK), just trying to be helpful and point you towards where most of the WotBS traffic was since you hadn't gotten a response here.

I'm currently playing in both, though I run every third Scales of War adventure.

In terms of character, planning (from what I can judge as I've not seen the DM's book - though Scales doesn't have a DM's book which annoys the heck out of me.

Scales of War's laid out clumsily with monsters and plot in different parts of the module. And 13 levels in, I'm still not confident that the long-term plot's going to hang out together. I've no idea whether we've been foreshadowing the right stuff.

On the plus side, it's free and that's one of the main benefits of it.

If I were to move house and want to run one for a new group, I think I'd pick WotBS without blinking. I can't speak for how well resourced the DM side of it is, as I simply don't know. However 4 levels in and every ounce of it's hung together well. By level 3 of SoW, I was fighting the party due to lack of foresight in the published modules.

No problem Morrus. Folks have responded in both places, and EnWorld got a purchase from me today. With a little encouragement I bought the first chapter. :)

Everything's cool!

I have access to DDI and ended up buying the WotBS subscription. I am starting my game this weekend and the reason why I bought WotBS is for multiple reasons. I prefer a balanced adventure with a lot of thought out foreshadowing, where there are things happening behind the scenes that the characters only get glimpses at. I also love the concept of the campaign! Plus I have used ENWorld a lot over the years and figure this can be my way of supporting the site, oh and the support in the ENWorld publishing forum is awesome! Hope that helps.

Cheers,
E
