Maybe it's my love of illithids, aboleths, grells, and tsochari talking, but GET. LORDS. OF. MADNESS.

I bought it -after- I knew about 4e.

QFT. This was my 2nd favorite pure read (after Draconomicon) of D&D books.

FC1 is probably the last great look at the Abyss as we currently know it, and it's also a lot of fun. It totally inspired me to make my current campaign demonic. :]

Don't forget the Neogi. I don't know why, but I love those guys.

Of course! Neogi!
I've never been big on the umber hulk thing - why umber hulks? - but their breeding is so unbelievably creepy. They're also a damn fine excuse to put links to spelljamming into any setting. Of course, my spelljammer is Shadows of the Spider Moon expanded to a three-system cluster sitting on the border of the disturbingly utopian 'Pax Illithica', so most PCs investigating find ignorance is bliss.

Lords of Madness and Libris Mortis both made my list of 'must haves', as did the Rules Compendium (I didn't think it would, though it's really a very useful product with several interesting sidebars).

Having used the Rules Compendium in actual play (although in only one session), I recommend it as well. It's rather well organized, and being able to look up relatively obscure stuff quickly was rather helpful.

Lords of Madness. The chapter on Neogi is worth the price of admission.
I like Frostburn, Sandstorm, Stormwrack. These are the kinds of nichey product I like, I just wish they had kept going in the environmental series.
Also, pick up Red Hand of Doom.

And of course Unearthed Arcana. Probably the best book for 3.5 that WOTC has done.

Avoid Tome of Battle and Tome of Magic.....absolute worst stuff they've done.

Considering that one of those is on the OP's list of books that 'drip liquid cool', that might not be particularly helpful. Or - at best - only 50% so, and then in an entirely subjective way.

Hmmm, considering that I have gotten more use out of Heroes of Battle than out of Heroes of Horrors, Dungeonscape, Frostburn, and Stormwrack combined I have to say it drips liquid, ummm, cool? Is cool supposed to be red like that?

Then again War is almost a given in my campaigns, so I may be biased.... :p
