D&D General WotC hiring a Principal AI Engineer

Agreed. It's inevitable.... Gotta have plans and start using it
There is nothing creative that AI does remotely well without so much user input that the user could do the same thing without the AI.

AI is literally just advanced “I see you’re trying to compose a letter, how can I help?”
It’s a probability engine that someone fed art into instead of math problems or dice or whatever.

The idea that TTRPG or video game studios need to even think about AI in terms of content is so bonkers left-field wacky that it’s hard to even force my brain into a shape that can track the reasoning behind such a statement.

Use for organization and workflow stuff makes sense, and leans into some of the very very few things AI is any good at, and you certainly can do some interesting stuff with human-curated AI-powered video game mechanics and content, like infinite levels, more responsive companion characters (any NPC with very very consistent and detailed profiles and major stuff done by a human. AI is worse than little kids at writing good fiction), etc.

If this is just for video games, it's seems like Game AI experience would be more than a nice to have. 🤷
Yeah for sure. This seems like a fairly fine case of AI use.

I imagine AI can improve QA in some video game cases, but like doing common things that break weaknesses in game systems and stuff like that, as well as the workflow and mindless “variation on a theme” generation stuff AI can do reasonably well.

I'm generally not a fan of AI art and writing, but I will admit that ChatGPT has saved me some time in helping to come up with ideas for NPC dialogue and text for letters and such. It was especially good for making a slightly unhinged dohwar merchant for my Spelljammer game.

The job reads more like a more traditional video game-y use of AI, which makes sense as WotC is ramping up as a software organization.

WotC are planning on replacing all D&D players with AI, so they don’t have to deal with annoying humans.
That's a joke that my staff likes to use.

After my kids had a bunch off from school in a row (they seem to have more 4-day weeks than they have 5-day weeks) I made the joke (not meaning to offend teachers), "This teaching job would be so much better without any kids!".

Soon we twisted the above at my Comic & Game store to, "This job would be so much better without any customers!"

Now, the not-funny part of it is that there seems to be A LOT of businesses these days that appear to be trying to find a way to make money while not actually doing the job that they are designed to do.

The joke is both funny and not funny at the same time!
